Each day across our larger HCA Healthcare network, emergency room (ER) nurses care for patients who are facing traumatic or severe, often life-threatening medical emergencies ranging from car accidents to strokes and heart attacks. Annually, HCA Healthcare hospitals see more than 9 million ER visits. ER nurses are trained to act decisively in critical situations, providing expert skill with compassion while reducing discomfort during each patient interaction. Today, HCA Healthcare announced that we will contribute $1 million through community organizations to aid in Hurricane Helene relief efforts in North Carolina. On Thursday, September 26, Hurricane Helene made landfall as a powerful category 4 hurricane, leaving more than four million people without power and causing major damage as it traveled throughout the Southeast. When the storm hit Asheville, North Carolina, it brought heavy rainfall, strong winds and widespread flooding that resulted in loss of life, significant damage and power outages. HCA Healthcare operates seven hospitals and has thousands of colleagues in western North Carolina, many of whom were affected by the storm and its aftermath. In response, HCA Healthcare is contributing $250,000 to the United Way of Asheville & Buncombe County to help with immediate natural disaster response and long-term support for flood victims. We will also give $250,000 to the American Red Cross North Carolina to help support its shelter locations. Persistence pays off! Cristine Solomon, a Care Manager in Continental Division, identified that a recently hospitalized patient was diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia that had not been addressed during her stay. Cristi contacted the patient after discharge and encouraged her to present to an HCA Healthcare hospital to have that concern addressed. The patient initially declined, but Cristi continued to call every day to check on her. After a few days being back home, the patient let Cristi know that she was feeling worse. Cristi continued to advocate for the patient’s return to the hospital to have her arrhythmia addressed. The patient finally agreed. During her hospital stay, her doctors told her that coming back to the hospital might have saved her life. She was prescribed medication to control her symptoms and was connected with a Physician Services cardiology practice for follow-up care. Once discharged, the patient called Cristi to express gratitude for her persistence and dedication.
