I was a little hesitant to be on a "digital technology" panel since I am no expert but it turned out that there are some important points from my experience with WAITRO that were worth raising. My thanks to VITO and G-STIC: Global Sustainable Technology & Innovation Community for the opportunity! There is a tendency for those heavily invested in a particular technology to rush into solving sustainability problems without ever adequately pausing to ascertain what those problems really are. Hence my comment about hammers and nails. Life-cycle, systems-level analysis of future sustainability is badly needed. An easy win? Low carbon power typically means dilute, intermittent sources with local storage. Integrating that requires smart grids, which can be enabled by digital technology. But what if such technology requires a huge increase in data centers for storage and data processing. Those use so much energy that we recently saw Google making off-take agreements with nuclear power plants just to service its future data center needs. Is there a guaranteed net gain? I dunno... nor can anyone tell me, it seems. Here in #Nanjing, I don't own a car, it makes no practical sense. Digital technology means I can call and pay for a ride from my personal tracking device (aka cellphone) within a few minutes, most of which are now electric. Now we just have to generate all that electricity sustainably, which will take a while but we can get there. Thirty years ago, however, I would probably have been making those across-town trips on a bicycle, with no emissions other than my own flatulence. Net gain for quality of life, maybe, but for sustainability? Never mind the problems of interoperability, privacy and (big one) security that will arise as all these systems, from transportation through energy to healthcare, go digital. It's going to happen one way or the other but we could use more systems-level thinking about what are our near and long term goals because if you shoot at nothing, you'll hit it every time.
In the plenary session, ‘Digital technologies to achieve the SDGs’ representatives and experts from different organizations shared their views on the challenges and impact of digital technologies in the context of the 2030 Agenda. Dr Ibrahim Hafeezur Rehman, Director of, School of Sustainability New Age Makers’ Institute of Technology (NAMTECH), who moderated the session, said, “The role of digital technologies in accelerating the SDGs is pervasive in every area, and sector. The most important aspect from the SDG point of view is the ability of digital initiatives to facilitate access. It is one of the critical areas because we have access issues across SDGs, particularly on some of the basic aspects of water, sanitation, education, health." Ms Sadhvi Saran, Strategy and Policy Advisor, Emergency Technologies Division International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Switzerland, emphasized, “ One of our main missions at the ITU is leveraging the power of digital to drive progress on the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. “Only 17% of the 169 SDG targets are currently on track. Progress on half of them is either weak or insufficient and 30% have either stalled or gone in reverse. “According to the ITU's estimates, approximately 2.6 billion people, more than a third of the total population today, still remain offline. Digital gender divide is also a matter of concern as 259 million more men currently use the Internet than women. Only 3% of early-stage funding on the has gone to the female founding teams, “ she said. Mr Luzango Mfupe, SMIEEE, Principal researcher, CSIR, said, “We are now in the age of digital revolution, soon there will be the fifth digital revolution and so on. But still so many are left unconnected in this digital era. And Africa is still the least digitally connected place in the world." “The biggest contributor to the digital divide is affordability, usage, and coverage gaps.” “The best infrastructure for connectivity is fiber but unfortunately it is very expensive in rural areas against urban.” Dr Paul Burrows, Vice President, JITRI - Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute and Secretary General, World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO), China, noted, “I think if you look at how digital technology can affect the SDGs, there are clear examples of how it can, but it is critically important to start with the problem that you want to solve.
