We have open positions in departments and offices across CalHHS! Over the last two years, we have expanded access to services, funded new programs, and retooled old programs, all with the idea that we build back stronger from the COVID-19 pandemic and better serve the most vulnerable among us. As Secretary Mark Ghaly likes to remind us, COVID-19 has not only been the greatest unmasker of inequities, but it also has been the greatest accelerant for change. Why should you come work at CalHHS? At CalHHS, we believe that transforming our state into a Healthy California for All is a team sport – it takes each of us doing our part. It requires the breaking down—the busting down—of stubborn silos between health programs on the one hand and social service programs on the other. It requires the authentic engagement with communities of all varieties, in all parts of the state, and in all languages across the state. It requires us to be person-centered, equity-focused, and data-driven. If you want to make a difference and ensure that we leave a better state for the next generation, then CalHHS is the right place for you. At CalHHS, we are focused on increasing representation from all groups, which requires us to approach our recruiting, selection, hiring and retention activities in new ways. This includes a shift from a department-centric lens to viewing our workforce as an Agency need and asset. It also includes a focus on non-traditional candidate pools, including candidates with lived experience, including those with visible and invisible disabilities, as well as those who currently or formally benefited from our safety-net programs and services. This allows us to not only help address our hiring challenges and enrich our workforce, but more importantly, create ladders of opportunity for those most vulnerable among us. Make California a healthy, vibrant, inclusive place to live, play, work, and learn.
About us
Our North Star: We envision a Healthy California for All where every individual belongs to a strong and thriving community. Where all our children can play and learn, and where we are confident that we have done all we can to pass to them a state they can lead into the future. Where older and disabled Californians can live with purpose and dignity, and where they are supported and valued. Where equity is not just a word or concept but the core value. Where we constantly pursue social and racial justice by not only lifting all boats but especially those boats that need to be lifted more. Where health care is affordable, accessible, equitable and high-quality so it drives toward improved health. Where we prioritize prevention and the upstream factors that impact an individual’s health and well-being. Where we are committed to tackling the economic inequalities that force many Californians to live on the street. Where necessities like housing and childcare are complimented by access to physical and behavioral health services. Where we see the whole person and where programs and services address the social, cultural and linguistic needs of the individuals they serve. Where climate threats collide with forward leaning health practices and policies that visibly turn the tide toward community resilience. And where we see our diversity as a strength, and where we embrace a joint responsibility to take care of one another.

It’s #NDEAM! Accessibility is essential for a disability-inclusive workplace; however, many companies may not know the steps to take to ensure accessibility within all levels of an organization. The Employer Assistance and Resource Network defines the various aspects of accessibility and outlines the positive benefits an accessible workplace can have on a company’s culture, productivity and employee morale. https://bit.ly/4epWM2u #NDEAM #DORWorks

Today, in Sacramento, we convened with the second cohort of counties implementing the CARE Act across California. Here are some highlights from the convening: "The approach that works is incredibly simple," said Amber. "It’s the fundamental approach of connecting with people on a human level and truly meeting people where they are at." “My favorite part of CARE is empowerment," said Claude. "For a long time, these people have not been able to make any choices about the circumstances of their lives.” “These communication methods [we have learned through CARE] are probably something we should be employing in all of our practices as public defenders," said Sara. “It’s important to reassure the respondents that this is not a criminal court, this is for them to get what they need," said Judge B. “CARE led to many county stakeholders... understanding better the plight of our homeless residents," said Brock.
