We created Count the Kicks, a successful stillbirth prevention public health campaign to save babies.
About us
Healthy Birth Day, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Des Moines, Iowa dedicated to healthy birth outcomes. We created the successful Count the Kicks public health campaign which has helped reduce Iowa’s stillbirth rate by 32% while the rest of the country has remained stagnant. Our evidence-based program teaches expectant parents the method for and importance of counting their baby's kicks daily in the third trimester of pregnancy. Our goal is to reduce the rest of the country's stillbirth rate by 32 percent, saving 7,500 babies every single year. Five Iowa moms who all lost daughters to stillbirth or infant death in the early 2000s turned their grief into fuel by creating the Count the Kicks awareness campaign in 2008. Kerry Biondi-Morlan, Jan Caruthers, Janet Petersen, Kate Safris and Tiffan Yamen are pioneers in stillbirth prevention, taking important fetal movement research from Norway and turning it into a successful mom-centered campaign. Moms everywhere can download the FREE Count the Kicks app which is available in the Google Play and iTunes online stores. The app, which is available in more than 15 languages, allows expectant moms to monitor their baby’s movement, record the history, set a daily reminder, count for single babies and twins.

BIG NEWS! Today, Healthy Birth Day, Inc. has been selected to be announced at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2024 Annual Meeting introducing innovative new AI technology and research that will help identify patterns and risk factors in pregnancy that may otherwise go unnoticed. Our commitment to action takes Count the Kicks, our free, easy-to-use pregnancy app and infuses innovative new AI technology that will help identify patterns and risk factors in pregnancy that may otherwise go unnoticed. A change in a baby’s movement patterns in the third trimester is often the earliest red flag in pregnancy that something might be going wrong. Count the Kicks is a proven early warning system that has already saved the lives of moms and babies in 36 states and 6 countries. Maternal health researchers will study, through the Count the Kicks app, whether AI can accurately predict and warn providers when something is off --- even earlier than before. In addition, we are unveiling our new ‘Ask Ana’ feature, an AI-generated assistant where Count the Kicks app users can receive evidence-based, curated responses to questions about baby’s movement, providing additional autonomy and advocacy for expectant parents. The AI-based assistant will provide real-time support to expectant mothers, offering insights tailored to their unique pregnancy experiences. After strong demand from current app users and doctors nationwide, Count the Kicks is also adding a contraction timer to its free app later this year. "We believe Healthy Birth Day's commitment will truly move the needle in improving birth outcomes and preventing stillbirths for vulnerable communities," said Greg Milne, CEO of the Clinton Global Initiative. "By utilizing AI to impact maternal health inequities, we're excited to amplify solutions to our most pressing common challenges." We are so honored to become a CGI Commitment Maker, which is elevating the work of Count the Kicks and how we help get babies here safely and improve outcomes for moms. It means we are accelerating progress in our work to end preventable stillbirth. We are excited to be joining Clinton Global at their Annual Meeting! Solutions will be in session and we’re proud to be a part of What’s Working to make the world a better place. #CGI2024
