Since February, the Hearst DevHub has been working with data editors and HNP reporters in Texas, California, Connecticut and New York to track campaign spending at the local and national levels during the run-up to the primaries and general election. The team worked in tandem with the San Francisco Chronicle, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News, Hearst Connecticut Media Group and the Times Union Media Group of Albany, N.Y., to build these trackers to help shine a light on who’s funding candidates and where the money is going. The combination of DevHub data and development skills with newsroom political expertise provides readers with a unique perspective they can’t get anywhere else. Thank you to Editor & Publisher (E&P) Magazine for covering this launch! The San Francisco Chronicle has introduced the Kamala Harris News Assistant—an AI-powered tool that helps readers explore more about the Democratic presidential candidate, backed by 29 years of Chronicle reporting. This project, a collaboration between the San Francisco Chronicle and the Hearst DevHub, was built with strong guardrails to ensure users find accurate facts about Harris without misinformation. "We took great care to ground each answer in the Chronicle's reporting," said Ryan Serpico, deputy director of newsroom AI and automation.
