We believe there is an intangible something that makes an exceptional place.
About us
Founded in 1999, Heliotrope has gained acclaim for a portfolio of residential and commercial commissions. Named after the heliotrope flower of myth, which orients itself towards the sun, we turn towards the idea that there is an intangible something that makes an exceptional place. This intangible quality begins with a commitment to what is deeply human. It starts with the context of you. What will being here mean? What will being here connect you to? For us, this work also demands a promise to do right by the land. We seek design solutions that are low-impact, sustainable, and improve the sites where they exist. Lastly, an exceptional place must be rooted in the present and committed to the future. We strive for lasting resonance. Quality that weathers. A sense of heritage that is built in from the beginning. Exceptional places change us. And that’s exactly why we set out to make them—in commitment to the land, in service to the future, and in ongoing conversation with you.

Over our 25-year history we have designed 28 homes in the San Juan Islands, with 18 of them realized to date. We approach our work with a deep sensitivity to island ecosystems, informed greatly by principal Joe Herrin’s long connection to the islands. Joe has been a donor and volunteer to the San Juan Preservation Trust for over 20 years and is currently a candidate for its board of trustees. Founded in 1979, the Trust has over the years protected more than 18,000 acres of biologically diverse land on 22 islands within the archipelago. Heliotrope was founded in the Ballard neighborhood 25 years ago, and we have been both occupants and stewards/owners of the historic Heritage Building on Ballard Avenue for 17 years. Our neighbors below, the Conor Byrne tavern, have been our partners in crime the entirety of our ownership. We are passionate about music in our office, with music playing throughout the workday and everyone taking their turn as DJ. We are proud to support our local music scene by partnering with Conor Byrne’s new owners in their efforts to invent a sustainable live-music business model. This team is creative and dedicated – we are rooting for them! https://lnkd.in/gxjGV-4p
