About us
Now in its sixth decade of practice, Olson Kundig is a collaborative design practice led by 13 principal/owners whose work includes cultural and museum projects, exhibition design, commercial and mixed-use design (including wineries and sports facilities), private and multi-family residential, hospitality projects, places of worship, interior design, product design and landscape design. With deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, the firm and its team of over 350 work with clients around the world. The firm began its creative existence in 1966 with the architect Jim Olson, whose work at that time centered on explorations of the relationship between dwellings and the landscapes in which they inhabit. Olson started the firm based on the essential ideas that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture, histories, and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Among the firm’s accolades are the 2009 National AIA Architecture Firm Award (as Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects), national and regional design awards from the American Institute of Architects, Jim Olson’s 2007 Seattle Medal of Honor and Tom Kundig’s National Design Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt and his Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Books on the firm’s work include Tom Kundig: Working Title (Princeton Architectural Press, 2020); Jim Olson: Building • Nature • Art (Thames & Hudson, 2018); Tom Kundig: Works (Princeton Architectural Press, 2015); Jim Olson: Art and Architecture (August Editions, 2013); Tom Kundig: Houses 2 (Princeton Architectural Press, 2011); Jim Olson Houses (The Monacelli Press, 2009); and Tom Kundig: Houses (Princeton Architectural Press, originally published in 2006 and re-released in 2021).

We’re proud to share the new Bay Area Football Club (known as Bay FC) Training Facility on San Francisco’s Treasure Island—a new home for the Bay Area’s first National Women’s Soccer League team. Led by design principals Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, and Steven Rainville, AIA, LEED AP, the facility blends sports science with Olson Kundig’s warm, residential sensibility, creating a home for athletes and staff. This world-class facility sets new standards for athlete empowerment, staff support, and community engagement, marking the next step in Bay FC’s evolution as a global sports franchise. “Bay FC Training Facility reflects California’s climate and cultural history, grounding it as both a symbolic and literal center of the Bay,” Tom notes. “Players commit to training together, building relationships, and working as a team every day. The design acknowledges the complexity of that commitment—to the sport, the team, and the place that supports them both.” Visit link below to learn more! https://lnkd.in/gksBKhE4 Project Team: Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal; Steven Rainville, AIA, LEED AP, Design Principal; Laura Sinn, Principal. Thanks to The Architect's Newspaper for featuring the newest addition to Stanford University’s campus, an administrative building for the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences (CASBS). Led by design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, the building is the first new structure on the CASBS campus since 1954. Its intentionally simple design, along with revitalized landscaping by SWA, elevates the historic mid-century architecture by architect William Wurster. “The new CASBS Administrative Building serves as a hub for collaboration,” shares Tom. “It defines the campus edge and reinforces the courtyard as a shared outdoor space for lectures, study, or simply enjoying the California weather.” Visit the link in bio to learn more! https://lnkd.in/dSADYNj7 #Architecture #Design #Stanford Photos by Aaron Leitz Project Team: Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal; Justin Helmbrecht, Principal; Jameson Hackbarth, Project Architect; Ekram Hassen, Gavin Argo, Architectural Staff Key Consultants: Blach Construction Company, General Contractor; SWA, Landscape Architect; BKF Engineers, Civil Engineer; KPFF Consulting Engineers, Structural Engineer; Niteo Lighting, Lighting Design

designboom recently highlighted Blue Ridge House, a family home in Delaplane, Virginia, led by design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA. Perched on a knoll overlooking surrounding vineyards, the cruciform design creates separate wings, each framing a unique view of the 92-acre winery. Blue Ridge House unfolds and extends into the trees on steel-reinforced cantilevers, while the reddish patina of its Corten steel siding reinforces the sense that the home has grown within the natural landscape.
