  • “It is this type of understanding goodwill that will transform the deep gloom of the old age into the exuberant gladness of the new age. It is this love which will bring about miracles in the hearts of [people].” - Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King’s transformative vision reminds us how the power of love, goodwill, and connection bring hope and joy to our communities. At Grouper, we see this transformation every day as people come together through meaningful activities that foster social connection and a sense of belonging. As we reflect on his legacy, let’s also look for ways to honor it—whether by joining a group activity, encouraging a friend to connect, or embracing healthy living through shared experiences that bring people closer. Together, we can create the miracles of love and connection that Dr. King envisioned. How will you honor MLK’s legacy today? #MLKDay #LoveAndConnection #BuildingCommunity #SocialFitness #HealthyLiving

The renowned writer and teacher Joseph Campbell wrote, “If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it’s not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take. That’s why it’s your path.” Grouper is dedicated to encouraging healthy living through activities that build meaningful social connections and shared experiences. The social activity benefit administered by Grouper is built to support people finding their own path to community and group activity. In this Member’s Corner episode, I'm excited to introduce you to three Grouper members who are living happier, healthier lives through connection and belonging, and doing it their way. #socialfitness https://lnkd.in/e3be9bhM

Chartered by Congress in 1919  as a war-time veterans service organization, the American Legion community now encompasses 2 million members – including veterans and their family members – and 12,103 chapters, which they call Posts. That adds up to a whole lot of cornhole, poker, open-to-the-public steak nights, and, above all, fellowship. Legionnaire Tony Cross is on a mission to introduce a new tradition at Posts across the country: conversations about mental health and suicide. In this very special Grouper Member's Corner, I invite you to meet Tony and learn how (and why) the Legion is taking aim at destigmatizing mental health treatment. #VeteransDay #SuicidePrevention #SuicideAwareness #SocialFitness https://lnkd.in/gxcv9iBJ

For 105 years, The American Legion has served the veteran community with unwavering dedication. Today, this revered Grouper partner has 2 million members across 12,103 Posts nationwide. In 2021, the Legion introduced Be The One, an initiative focused on mental health awareness and suicide prevention, aiming to empower Legionnaires to connect with fellow veterans and guide them to essential support. Creating any kind of a cultural shift in an organization as large and as old as The American Legion requires leadership. In this very special Member’s Corner, it’s my privilege to introduce you to Tony Cross, whose passion and personal story are helping to power that shift. #VeteransDay #SuicidePrevention #SuicideAwareness #SocialFitness https://lnkd.in/gSKUyS3h

It is said that making room for playtime with friends throughout life is a key to staying young. Did you know there’s a network of thousands of model railroad enthusiasts spread across the country, many of whom congregate around basement layouts for extensive operating sessions?! In this month’s Member’s Corner, I invite you to spend a few minutes visiting with Grouper member Roy Masterson and his neighborhood of make-believe in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As a member of the National Model Railroad Association, Roy, 78, is on track for many more years of friendship, fun and accomplishment through model railroading. (Spoiler: You can get a Master’s in Model Railroading!) And before my DMs get flooded with questions about how to find a basement play session near you: The NMRA has been supporting their community of over 150 divisions and thousands of members for 90 years. They will be happy to assist you, too! #socialfitness

I love this movie so much and you will too. At Grouper, we're focused on the health benefits of group activity -- the fun, the friends, the sense of purpose and community that clubs provide. Join or Die takes a different angle: "Join a club…the fate of America depends on it." #socialfitness

Some exciting news: JOIN OR DIE — our film about why you should join a club…and why the fate of America depends on it — just launched on Netflix! In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary Harvard social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly… What can we do about it? Stream the film now at: Netflix.JoinOrDieFilm.com Watch the trailer at: Trailer.JoinOrDieFilm.com While we’re excited about the launch on Netflix, the center of our focus remains JOIN OR DIE’s in-person community screening tour, which we’ll be continuing throughout 2025. This is a film meant to be watched together — so we hope you can host a community screening in your neighborhood or at your institution. To start the process, head over to Host.JoinOrDieFilm.com. So much of the national conversation these days is intensifying our civic ills: polarization, screen addiction, alienation, distrust, and distraction from local community problem-solving. We hope JOIN OR DIE being more widely available can expand our efforts to offer critical counterprogramming: an urgent message that the fate of our democracy depends on our real-world engagement with our neighbors and routine participation in our local communities.
