About us
They say it takes a village to raise a child, but what if the village is siloed? What if the village is under-resourced? What if the village is fighting to make ends meet and burned out? Inspiring Minds was designed as a collective impact approach to build community through multiple stakeholders from the community providing culturally responsive programs and experiences for Black and Brown youth. Founded by Katrena Perou in 2019, she accomplished her goal by uniting multiple partners and stakeholders from the community to create the IM Leadership Institute, which provides the following services: * Sankofa Rites of Passage - Cultural Identity * Life Goal Labs - Health and Wellness *CIVICS - Art Integrated approach to civic engagement * Cryptowoke - Financial Literacy *Youth Conferences *Arts based after-school clubs *Paid Internships *Town Halls *College Tours *Sankofa Saturdays *IMCEO - Incubator space for student led programs/businesses We thank all of our community partners, especially our founding team: Breaking the Cycle, The Spirit Seed and Yeyex. We are the village!

On Tuesday, May 21st, we will be celebrating our students who are making history everyday at Weeksville Heritage Center! We will unpack how to use our passion, skills and abilities through young people who created programs & businesses that address issues in our community. We are looking forward to a keynote from Nupol Kiazolu, who will share how she made history through her career as an activist! This event is a culminating event for our community schools and Project Pivot work, and students will be joining us from Brookkyn, Manhattan and Queens! Lastly, we are grateful for Janice Ross, Dr. Allison Farrington, and James O’Brien for funding towards our IMconnected Shark Tank events since 2021, putting us in a position to produce a conference 100% led by our youth. Thank you!!! Full agenda: https://lnkd.in/eqFDrRGV

Yesterday we partnered with Brooklyn North High Schools to host the screening of Black Men in America for the young men of My Brother’s Keeper! Pulitzer and Emmy award winning Journalist Trymaine Lee joined us and shared with us his “why” and the importance of us telling our own stories. The Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College, CUNY joined us to present data on the power of the Gen Z vote. Did you know that 850,000 young people between 18-29 are eligible to vote in NYC but only 226,000 casted a vote in 2022? This means if they all voted they could literally control the NYC agenda. This is why we are grateful for the Brooklyn NAACP for registering every student who was 16 and up at our event! Team work makes the dream work y’all! This election is one of the most important for many reasons and we encourage you to vote and to encourage your young people who are 16 and up to register to vote! Thank you Janice Ross & Terrence Paulin for allowing us to work with your young men. Also sending a special shout out to Dr. Anael Alston and George O. Patterson for joining us, to Lurie Daniel Favors for coming through with the data and Joan Bakiriddin for her diligence in getting everyone registered! 🙌🏾 #ourfutureourvote #OFOV2024 #registeredandready

Vaping has become a major issue in our community and has caused significant harm to our youth. We’re proud of Ashton and Ramzie, our MBK leaders, from Atech High School, for taking the initiative to launch the #dontblowit campaign for Brooklyn North High Schools. Their presentation yesterday was outstanding, and we challenge all of you to get involved in order to take their project to the next level. We’d like to give a shoutout to Jeremiah Griffin from @atechhighschool for supporting them in getting their campus involved. Let’s work together to nip this trend in the bud by making sure our youth are aware of the health risks that come with vaping. Janice Ross Terrence Paulin Dr. Anael Alston

"For women of color in leadership roles, the challenges often are the same whether in Corporate America or community-based organizations. As Taraji P. Henson, star of The Color Purple, recently said when talking about race, the gender pay gap, and the unreasonable expectations Black women endure, 'The math ain't mathing!' " In her latest column, our President & CEO Jocelynne Rainey, Ed.D. writes about how women of color leaders are finding their “why” in the face of challenges while driving critical work forward, speaking with Executive Director of Inspiring Minds NYC Katrena Perou about her experience as a nonprofit leader: https://lnkd.in/eb6wn9nB

Thank you Jocelynne Rainey, Ed.D. for recognizing my “why” in leading Inspiring Minds NYC! I am grateful for your support 🙏🏾. Overcoming challenges and obstacles to reach our 5 year anniversary has not been easy, but reminding myself of my “why” has been the secret ingredient💡. In the picture below, you can see me surrounded by amazing interns from Research & Service High School, led by Dr. Allison Farrington. They keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of mentoring the next generation.
