Inspire. Engage. Educate.

About us

Urban Arts teaches digital game design as a pathway to college and career for underrepresented students. Because a quality education shouldn’t depend on a child’s zip code. We teach underrepresented students the art and technology of game development through computer science, coding, animation, music, and storytelling. We provide private-school level college-access services and ensure our students earn the maximum in scholarships. We connect our alumni to mentorship and internship opportunities at leading media and technology companies, generating a new and diverse talent pipeline. Urban Arts inspires students from low-income communities to harness their creativity and access technology, generating lifelong success through exceptional educations and state-of-the-art careers. Our students learn to collaborate, problem solve, and lead. Our video game design course is an engaging entry point to teach computer sciences. It requires creative investment paired with exceptional technical skills. These courses craft future leaders and creatives in tech, media, and entertainment. The U.S. tech industry has an estimated market value of $1.6 Trillion. In New York, the digital games industry is directly responsible for 4,600 jobs, $489 Million in wages, and $1.3 Billion in economic output. Business of this scale should look like all of us. Attracting a skilled, diverse and inclusive workforce is both an industry priority and an equity imperative. Urban Arts is 30 years old, and we’ve served over 260,000 students across 150 schools. We’re full STEAM ahead.

Attention NYC High Schools, STEM teachers, and parents! Help your gamer students apply early for Urban Arts' fun, rigorous, and free after school game design and CS program, where they create their own video game. Students learn the programming language C# to code their own video games with Unity 3D and create their own art, music/SFX and narratives for their games. Then, they'll be eligible to level-up to advanced programs at Urban Arts and receive college access support. Last year alone, we helped our students earn over $7 million in college scholarships. WHEN: October - June, after school or on Saturdays WHERE: At our learning lab near Union Square, or virtually on Discord WHO: Rising 9th, 10th and 11th graders HOW: Our application process is simple and easy: Students join a brief online info session, then fill out our early application with a parent/guardian. If you believe your students would love to hear about this program, we may be able to schedule a one-hour Game Design Masterclass at your school, where students can learn about our program and have a fun, hands-on game design experience. This offer is based on availability, and we’d require at least 25 students in attendance. Reach out to sia@urbanarts.org with inquiries. Learn more & sign up: https://lnkd.in/eDACPny7

Urban Arts Summer Camp was a hit! For the last six weeks, 100+ students learned coding, Unity engine, and other digital tools to write, make music and art, and create games. Meet two of our game makers, Meisha and Andre! “My name is Meisha and my game is The Cookie. I did a lot of the music and the sound effects.” Have you done music before? “No. I learned BandLab” “My name is Andre. I did the art for the game The Cookie.” Were you an artist before you came here? “A little bit. I wasn't like a professional artist. I just like to draw in my room.” Who came up with the evil grandpa? Meisha: “I came up with it being a horror game and Andre and Kyle came up with it being a grandpa.” PLAY SOME SUMMER CAMP GAMES! https://lnkd.in/e4UCM59U

Thank you Unity for having us! These office visits are meant to give our students and alum a look into top companies and how they operate, hopefully opening doors and inspiring them. Exposure to the world of work can help students develop critical skills and increase their employability. It can also enrich their learning experience. We cannot thank the Unity team enough for making this happen. Special thanks to Liyah Teller for organizing this memorable day and all the volunteers who made this trip possible!

Urban Arts Hits the Road Again! 🚀 This afternoon, our students had the amazing opportunity to visit the NYC office of Unity. Our rising seniors met with Unity professionals, including one of our own alumni and former junior faculty, Sarah A., who is now the newest member of the Unity team! Our students, who have spent their summer building games on Unity while also familiarizing themselves with the college admissions process through our college access program, were thrilled to dive deeper into the world of tech. We had insightful discussions about career pathways, received invaluable advice, and enjoyed an inspiring office tour. As they prepare to start their senior year and begin their college application journeys, this experience has set a positive tone for what's ahead. One student even mentioned, "This was cool, I totally want to work here," as we were leaving the elevator. 🌟 A huge thank you to Ari Brandt, Danielle Shevchuk, and Noah Freed for making time to speak with our students and for opening their eyes to new possibilities. Special thanks to Liyah Teller for organizing this memorable day!
