Nonprofits, businesses, and community leaders working together for a future where homelessness is rare and brief.

About us

No matter our race, gender, or income we all want to get and keep a roof over our heads. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. HereTogether is committed to tackling the complex and deeply rooted issue of homelessness in pursuit of a Portland region where everyone has access to housing, supportive community, services, and income that allows them to thrive. HereTogether emerged in 2019 as a coalition of diverse stakeholders working to secure the resources necessary to tackle our region-wide crisis. After championing the passage of the Supportive Housing Services measure – our nation’s largest per-capita homeless services revenue stream – HereTogether evolved into a coalition watchdog advocating for robust, equitable, and effective implementation of the program. We unite service providers, business leaders, elected officials, and advocates to scale our region’s efforts against homelessness, all working towards a shared vision: a future where everyone has a safe, secure place to call home. Some of the ways we work in the community include: - We facilitate collaboration and discussion among our coalition partners and community members. - We train nonprofit communicators to shift public perceptions and rally support for proven solutions. - We engage coalition members in monthly meetings to address pressing issues and keep each other informed about what’s going on in our community. - We publish a curated guide each month for people like you – it’s all about how the Portland region is addressing the homeless crisis and what needs to happen next. To stay informed about the housing crisis or get involved with a Portland community that’s actively engaged with solutions to homelessness, send us a DM or sign up for our newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/heretogetheroregon/happening-now-newsletter

What does it mean to treat people experiencing homelessness as our neighbors? WeShine PDX, a newer nonprofit on the housing and homelessness scene, wants to answer that question. “WeShine was started by neighborhood activists who wanted to give neighbors something to be for, instead of something to be against,” Jan McManus, WeShine’s executive director, said. “And they wanted to respond to the NIMBYism with something more proactive and positive that would engage neighbors and local businesses and faith communities.” WeShine’s newest project, the tiny-home community called the Avalon Village, is a collaboration between the Hosford-Abernethy Neighborhood District and the nonprofit. Over the course of two years, HAND and others in the neighborhood worked with WeShine to develop a plan for the village and make sure everyone in the neighborhood was on board. Learn more about the anti-NIMBY origins of the Avalon Village and who the village serves in our latest for the HereTogether blog.

Welcome to our first Coalition Kudos! Every month, we’ll spotlight a person working in our coalition to make a difference for their organization and their community. This month’s feature: Emily Hutsell, Cultivate Initiatives HR Director. Emily’s coworker Brianna nominated her for Kudos. Here’s what Brianna had to say about Emily’s sparkling work: “Emily is an amazing HR director, coworker, and friend. She takes her responsibilities seriously and helps us navigate the sometimes strenuous nature of supportive employment and working with people who are unhoused. Emily is always available to listen and give advice and is passionate about making Portland more equitable and safe. She is amazing!” -Brianna Kroeker, Cultivate Initiatives Development Associate Have a colleague who deserves the spotlight? Send us a DM with their name, email, and why they deserve the shoutout! They’ll get a spot on our socials and a $50 Visa gift as a reward for their hard work!

    Communications Associate at HereTogether Oregon

The way we discuss homelessness matters. This is something I’ve been thinking about since I began a new position with HereTogether Oregon working on homelessness policy advocacy communications last month. Already I can see that the words we use and the images we invoke when discussing homelessness shape how people approach the issue on a policy level. As part of my onboarding for this work, I’ve been watching a series of videos on how to harness the power of storytelling, led by Marisol Bello of Housing Narrative Lab. Marisol engages local organizations in building compassionate and compelling narratives around our advocacy for those forced into homelessness.
