Welcome to Heylo, Threshold Sports ! 🎉 From the Threshold Trail Series to Endure 24, these events are about more than just crossing the finish line—they’re about community, support, and shared experiences. We can't wait to see your runners thrive and surpass their goals as they support each other and experience the joy of community. #HeyloGroups #Community #Running
As the old proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” Completing a Threshold Sports event is a personal challenge for many, but the journey to the finish line is far from a solo sport. Having a community can have a huge impact on your experience on event day. We are delighted to be bringing the Threshold Trail Series and Endure 24 to the community platform Heylo to help our incredible community of runners and walkers connect with one another. By providing dedicated virtual spaces for participants and those interested in taking part to chat, ask questions, share training tips, and connect with others in their local area, it’s our hope that Heylo will help create a smoother journey in the build-up to our events. Meet Heylo, founded by the dynamic duo Eric Winters and Brandon Pearcy, who launched their community leadership platform in 2019. 🎯 Their mission? To empower community leaders with tools to organize, communicate, plan events, and collect membership payments seamlessly. When it came to choosing a partner to help them scale, Heylo picked Brevo’s API and CRM suite to route in-app messages to users’ email inboxes. 📈 The results? International success! With Brevo’s platform offering transactional emails, marketing campaigns, and automation, Heylo saw a 20% increase in group creations. Lionel places high value on personal engagement within the @originalpropagandaathleticclub community. Whenever he spots someone on the path to being a leader or dedicated member of OPAC, he invites them to a one-on-one coffee chat. This time together lets him learn about their running goals and get to know them personally, something that's hard to do at bustling run club events. These individual meetings allows Lionel to gather valuable feedback and insights, ensuring that OPAC is meeting the needs and expectations of its members. It helps him understand his members, which allows him to form OPAC to better support them and their needs. Making our customer’s customer happy. Heylo helps group leaders build community and collect payments. They are our customer, and we create and refine the Heylo platform for them to have a great experience leading their group. However, our work doesn’t stop with group leaders. Their customer is the group member - the people they work so hard to bring together. Heylo must work for both our customer, group leaders, and our customer’s customer, group members. The top frustration among group members is Heylo loading time. Heylo feels slow! Every week we receive a random sample of Net Promoter Scores ranking Heylo 1-10. We aim for 9s and 10s, not 6s and below. When members submit a low score, the most common reason is speed. Heylo is “laggy” or “took forever.” This past month we focused on removing friction for members, starting with loading speed. Heylo is built on React Native, and our engineering team, led by Brandon Pearcy and Kyle Patel, worked relentlessly to improve our speed. Through the culmination of many small updates, we streamlined how information loads in the Heylo app and made Heylo 2x faster. With improved information loading, Heylo feels faster, and the group member experience dramatically improves. We’re already seeing the results. Our NPS scores increased 20% this past week and the app just feels so much more delightful to use! To make our customer happy, we must also make our customer’s customer happy.

Running club leaders, this is a story you need to hear. Lionel Brodie III, the founder of Original Propaganda Athletic Club (OPAC) in Philadelphia, has built something truly special: a running community that embodies the meaning of “all faces, all paces." Lionel's journey began with a simple three-mile run that ignited his passion for running and a vision to create an inclusive club experience. Drawing inspiration from leaders like Charlie Dark in London and the Bridge Runners in NYC, Lionel established OPAC with the core belief that "any and everything that makes you up as a human being is welcome with us.” Over the past decade, OPAC has grown into a thriving community defined by its focus on inclusivity, Olympic-level experiences, and genuine personal connections. Here are the key lessons Lionel learned about leading a running club: * Prioritize consistency to build trust and community * Empower members to take on leadership roles that play to their strengths * Host signature events that bring your community together * Leverage technology to streamline organization and communication Heylo The results speak for themselves. OPAC has become a fixture in the Philly running scene, with members proudly representing the club's inclusive spirit and high-quality gear. Running club leaders, take note. If you want to build a community that truly welcomes runners of all backgrounds and experience levels, OPAC's model is worth studying. Imagine effortlessly creating an entirely unique event cover photo that perfectly captures your event and community vibe, all in a single click. At Heylo, this is now a reality thanks to AI. Last month, Heylo generated over 1,000 AI images, marking a 40% increase from the prior month. Why AI Photos on Heylo, a Group Platform? Group leaders work hard to bring people together around what they love. Success is measured by event attendance and engagement. The aesthetics of the event can impact how people feel when they join and participate, including the photo. Previously, if a group leader didn’t have their own perfect photo for their event cover, they would hunt around Google Images or use a generic template. It looked low quality and lackluster. Now, with AI in Heylo, they can generate a unique photo that fits the vibe and culture of their community. For example, Courtney Hollingsworth and the leaders of Electric Athletic Club San Francisco generated the attached photo for a collab event with Patagonia: Context and Data Matter Instead of a single prompt, Heylo appends all the relevant information about the group to the AI prompt automatically and instantaneously for the group leader. This information is not limited to the name of the event but also includes relevant data about what the group does and what potential attendees may be interested in. Providing context to the AI generates radically improved results. UX Must Account for Slow Load Time Generating images with AI takes time. On average, an AI-generated photo from Heylo takes 8 seconds to load. For a consumer application, 8 seconds is 7.9 seconds too long, and most people will churn out. Instead of making group leaders wait, they can continue editing their event while the AI photo is generated in the background. By the time leaders complete event details like time and location, their AI-generated photo is ready to view. It takes 8 seconds, but it doesn’t slow down the leaders. Get on the Right Side of AI Architecture Improvements When we started exploring AI-generated photos, prior OpenAI models were generating images that didn’t look human and cost a fortune. Now, photos are looking more realistic, tasteful, and contextually relevant. Costs have dropped significantly. Being the beneficiary of dramatic performance and cost improvements is a magical place to be—the experience on Heylo improves as models get better, faster, and cheaper. The more we incorporate AI into Heylo, the more interesting feedback we get. We are now building a more robust co-leader and transitioning from reactive to proactive AI. I’d love to hear any thoughts and comments.
