Renewable Green Hydrogen

About us

HGenium is focused on achieving the first commercialization of sustainable green hydrogen (H2) production via thermochemical water splitting using heat at temperatures below one thousand degrees Celsius. Thermochemical water splitting offers high-efficiency production of hydrogen from renewable energy and does not require expensive or toxic materials. Our technology is based upon the patented work of the Mark E. Davis research group at the California Institute of Technology. We are presently developing commercial systems based on our proven, peer-reviewed innovations.

We are thrilled to announce that HGenium has been selected as a Finalist for the pitch competition at the prestigious National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Industry Growth Forum (IGF) 2025. This recognition underscores our commitment to revolutionizing and lowering the cost of green hydrogen production through our proprietary thermochemical water-splitting technology that will reduce the cost of green hydrogen production. Our innovative chemical cycle addresses several critical challenges in manufacturing green hydrogen, making clean energy more accessible and economically viable; especially when coupled with the cycle’s ability to extract CO2 through Direct Air Capture (DAC). NREL’s IGF is the premier event for cleantech entrepreneurs, investors, and experts from industry and the public sector. We're honored to have the opportunity to present our groundbreaking technology to an audience of over 300 investors and industry professionals. We’re committed to "Supplying and Powering the Future with Clean Hydrogen" through our innovative solutions designed to "accelerate the transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy." Our mission aligns perfectly with the Forum's focus on fostering groundbreaking clean energy technologies. Stay tuned for updates as we prepare to pitch at the NREL Industry Growth Forum - March 26-28 in Denver, CO. We're looking forward to connecting with fellow innovators and potential partners in the cleantech ecosystem. #GreenHydrogen #IGF2025 #Cleantech #SustainableEnergy

I'm still buzzing with excitement from my recent experience at Camp Cleantech in Denver, Colorado. Hosted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (NREL IEC) and sponsored by Wells Fargo, this leading-edge event brought together the brightest minds in climate tech at the impressive CSU Spur education center. It is truly inspiring to see and exchange ideas with so many innovators united in the mission to bring transformative climate technologies to market. I highly recommend keeping an eye out for future Innovate NREL events. The connections and insights gained are invaluable. #CampCleantech #ClimateInnovation #StartupCollaboration #NREL #IEC #WellsFargo #CleanTech #innovateNREL

  • We are excited to welcome outstanding new talents to our Research and Development Engineering team - Steven Bustillos and Hunter Whaples. Steven brings an impressive academic background, with a bachelor’s in chemistry from the UC Santa Barbara and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the UCLA. The focal point of his doctoral research was on the development and scale-up design of innovative technologies connected to HGenium’s process. With Steven’s experience in lab to pilot scale-up reactor design and operational scale-up, he brings invaluable expertise that will support continued success of HGenium's process development activities. His passion for driving success through innovation aligns perfectly with our mission and culture. Hunter comes to HGenium after several years as a Research and Development Engineer at a leading renewable energy company, where he made huge contributions to the development, securement, and execution of research projects in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) and companies like General Electric (GE) and Dimensional Energy. He also gained invaluable experience with high temperature technology development for concentrated solar power, including advancing solar receivers, solar reactors, and heat exchangers. The breadth of Hunter's experience in technoeconomic analysis, process modeling, and lab-to-pilot scale-up is a welcomed asset for HGenium. Hunter is also deeply committed to STEM outreach and tinkering. He is an avid 3D printing enthusiast and actively work with high school robotics teams, university researchers, and local companies to incorporate additive manufacturing into their work. We are incredibly excited to have both Steven and Hunter on board as we improve and scale-up HGenium’s first of its kind technology to commercially produce green hydrogen through thermochemical water-splitting.
