Initiated by the Columbus Redevelopment Commission, community leaders approved an integrated four-part strategy to create and sustain an iconic riverfront experience that strengthens Columbus’ distinctive brand and robust economy. At the western gateway to its historic downtown, the 22-acre Columbus Riverfront concept includes connections to engage motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and paddlers, compelling attractions including the conversion of a low head dam into an exciting in-river whitewater feature, a high-amenity Riverwalk, a nature-based children’s play environment, and a captivating appearance that respects the city’s extraordinary architectural and design heritage. The project is expected to promote adjacent land development, generate over $103,000 in annual local and state tax revenue, and attract the area’s high-tech workforce. Hitchcock Design Group facilitated community engagement and created the concept alongside a team of experts in market and real estate economics, dam removal / whitewater recreation, water resources, and structural engineering. #designexcellence #collaborationequity Making it happen: Randy Royer, ASLA, CLARB Shannon Harcourt M.J. Our South Florida team had a blast hosting two high school students on a recent exploration of the Architecture and Landscape Architecture fields as they enter their Senior Year at local Coral Springs high schools. We had a chance to show them the power of design in Landscape Architecture through various HDG projects and some of Alexander Fenech, PLA, ASLA’s work throughout his career. We also gave a little plug to the University of Florida and Florida International University programs since they both want to stay here in Florida. Finally, we closed the visit out with a fun lunch together before breaking for the weekend! #futurelandscapearchitects #asla #aslafl #landscapearchitecture #designexcellence #lifebalance

Lake Villa District Library is a stunning, 67,000 SF, three-floor facility opened in August 2019 on a site that features 40 feet of topography, remnant woodland and wetland communities, providing the setting for a one-of-a-kind library landscape. Phase I of the master plan has been to make the main entry side court and seating terraces functional as an extension of the interior spaces and for everyday use. But a landscape intervention was needed to add shade to a south facing space with lots of paving, as well as to provide hospitality, adding comfortable seating, providing power, adding greenery and repurposing existing elements to increase functionality and not be wasteful. To create a memorable, on-brand shade structure, more than 800 authors names were laser cut into 1/8” aluminum panels. We were delighted to attend the recent ribbon cutting on the renovation of the lovely Terrace View Park in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. As said by the Park District, “This renovation reflects our newly adopted vision statement, which is ‘to foster a strong sense of community by building connections through shared experiences.’” We heartily concur! Hitchcock Design Group worked with the District to design a fun, accessible playground for the community. The renovation included new layout, underdrainage, curbs, walks, accessible parking improvements, seating areas, site furnishings, bike racks, accessible playground equipment, accessible poured-in-place rubber play surfacing and landscape plantings. There are play elements for kids of all abilities and ages including swings, climbing towers, musical instruments, interactive panels, and spinners. The shade structure over the center of the playground provides additional comfort for kids while playing. Hey and Associates, Inc. #designexcellence

HDG Principal Alex Fenech and Senior Associate Aaron Elswick made quite an impact at last week’s ASLA Florida Annual Conference + Expo in Orlando. 🌴The theme of the conference, Cultivating Connections, put special emphasis on nurturing cultural landscapes, embracing policy engagement, and strengthening climate resilience. Alex, as past President, gave a Trustee update and 1-year recap on the chapter’s exceptional Online Education Platform (enthusiastically distributing some coveted swag). Aaron's presentation, Climate-Positive Design: From Theory to Practice was lively, informative and well-attended. And they both had the opportunity to make connections and find inspiration in an insider's tour of Lake Nona Town Center, an exceptional, 4-million-square-foot, mixed-use development. Not to mention some quality time on the links! American Society of Landscape Architects - Florida Chapter #designexcellence #collaborationequity #lifebalance

Paducah Sports Park is poised to breathe new life into the storied grounds once home to the iconic Bluegrass Downs. This ambitious redevelopment project is transforming the former horse racing venue into a premier sports complex that will serve as a vibrant hub for athletes, families, and sports enthusiasts in Paducah, Kentucky, and beyond. A significant portion of the park was named after Dr. William Stuart Nelson, a beloved African-American community member, educator and peace activist. Master plan and design by Hitchcock Design Group. Anticipated opening, 2025. #indianapolis #paducah #masterplan #parks #recreation #landscapearchitecture Indiana Chapter of ASLA

Creative play is a vital part of childhood and child development. Through creative and imaginative play children can grow emotionally, socially, intellectually, and even physically. Creative experiences help a child develop these skills and enable them to share their thoughts, feelings and ideas. Exposing children to creative opportunities contributes to, and furthers their development. Coming up with ways to play creatively doesn’t have to be stressful or take a lot of time. In fact, over-structuring is the opposite of creative play. Every small step toward developing a child’s skills is a major milestone in their growth and happiness. Here are just a few of the creative play projects we've been privileged to lead.
