Pop culture thoughts from the “desk” (read: couch) of a marketer… this week I’ve been reading all about the Timothee Chalamet look alike contest, which THE REAL TC showed up to, and it got me thinking about the power of IRL events, activations, and human connection. This specific event, which I read about practically everywhere, was organized by a mystery person, garnered almost 13,000 attendees. The prize? $50. What does that tell me about behavior in 2024? Mainly that no one cares about money (just kidding) and we all want to find connection, first and foremost. Connection with people who have similar interests, live in the same city, watch the same movies. Timmy is also filming a movie right now in NYC, so his appearance definitely helps market that. We hosted a Hive insiders event earlier this month and I saw the same thing play out there. Customers, partners and Hive teammates came together to talk about making work easier for us all. It was more about the connection over shared passions and goals than the swag giveaways (although people liked that too). Looking forward to 2025 and beyond, I am eager to see how companies, individuals, marketers, celebrities, etc harness this increased desire for connectivity and companionship. Charli XCX has demonstrated the power of IRL pop ups and events all summer as well, and I will be keeping my eye on brands that follow in these footsteps. All I know right now is that any brand who can replicate this sort of ad-hoc event spirit will succeed, big time.
