The Donald E. Young Center at Black Hills State University is a unique hub for academics, athletics and community engagement. As the university transitioned its athletics programs to NCAA Division II and expanded rosters in the early 2010s, the Young Center gradually fell behind the current state of athletics at the university and in higher education. In 2023, university leadership hired Hollis + Miller to conduct a feasibility assessment for the facility, addressing urgent Title IX concerns while facilitating a compelling long-term vision. Through strategic stakeholder engagement, including surveys and interviews, our team gathered valuable insights to guide the design process and transformation. The result is a phased renovation plan that enhances the student-athlete experience, optimizes space usage and maintains the center's vibrant community role. #wedesignthefuture
