Eager to get a taste of Hispanic Heritage Month? Meet Christina Valencia, who has served as an entrée cook at HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center for the last 34 years. “I’m from Jalisco, Mexico. That’s where my roots are and where I learned to cook from my mom,” Christina says. “I really enjoy making salsas, since it’s always easy and fun to do." Her passion has led to back-to-back wins at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month event put on by our CULTURA People Resource Group. Team members and patients are invited to join a blind taste test of salsas to pick a winner. Award-winning recipes aren’t often shared. But Christina’s salsa is available for everyone to try. “I always give the recipe to anyone who asks for it and try to have it in stock on a weekly basis,” she says. Buena suerte to all of this year's competitors!

A decade ago, HonorHealth CEO Todd LaPorte experienced a life-changing event — a heart attack. That day became a turning point not only in his personal health but also in his approach to leadership. "What I learned from all of that is that my attitude of selfless service to others had to start with, ironically, taking care of myself," he says. By prioritizing his health, Todd’s quality of life has improved, inspiring his journey as a leader and a reminder to us all that taking care of ourselves is the first step to helping others. We often hear that working at HonorHealth feels more like a family than a large health system. For Julie, that couldn't ring truer. Since joining her two sisters (who are also HonorHealth nurses!), she’s served as a preceptor, trainer and welcomed new nurses to the floor. “It can be an eye-opening experience when they start and this allows me to help them get through tough days and still love what we do,” Julie adds. “Watching the ‘ah ha’ moments when something clicks, and critical thinking takes over, is so rewarding.” She’s also the Unit Base Council Chair focusing on making the workplace a family-like environment. “Engaging team members with activities, games or even friendly competition has made a real difference on the unit,” Julie says. “We are there for each other. We laugh, cry and go through the thick of it together. Being a nurse, and part of this team, has been such a rewarding experience. I’ve learned so much in a short time and I wouldn’t trade this career choice for the world.”
