The tragic murder of Sonya Massey by Deputy Sean Grayson, after she called 911 for help, has starkly highlighted a painful reality. For many women experiencing domestic violence and sexual assault or a mental health crisis, engaging with law enforcement is fraught with fear and skepticism. When the intersection of race and gender is present the fear can be even more present. Sonya Massey’s death is a devastating example of why these women often hesitate to seek protection from their abusers or help when in crisis. Advocates have long heard from survivors about their fears: not being believed, not being supported, not being protected, and even the possibility of experiencing additional harm from those sworn to protect them. Sonya Massey’s murder tragically confirms these fears, reinforcing the deep-seated mistrust many survivors have toward law enforcement. I know this does not reflect the actions of all law enforcement officers, I acknowledge that. Over the past 25 years, I have worked with many outstanding officers dedicated to their duty. However, we cannot ignore the profound impact of Sonya Massey’s murder and the validation it provides to survivors’ fears is a systemic issue that must be addressed. The mission of law enforcement is to protect and serve. But how can this mission be fulfilled when those who seek help may end up being killed? Sonya Massey’s death demands a thorough examination of how law enforcement interacts with vulnerable communities and a commitment to meaningful change to ensure that every call for help is met with safety, respect, and compassion. Sonya’s death must be a catalyst for systemic reform. Law enforcement agencies must prioritize training in trauma-informed care and cultural competence, emphasizing the importance of understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. Furthermore, there must be accountability and transparency in handling such tragic incidents, ensuring justice for victims and rebuilding trust within the communities they serve. In memory of Sonya Massey, we must advocate for a future where every individual and survivor feel safe to seek help without fear of harm, where protection and justice are accessible to all, regardless of race or background.
