🎬 Netflix's new hit superhero show, "Supacell" is raising awareness of sickle cell disease in an impactful way. Sickle Cell Disease affects more than 100,000 people in the United States and 20 million people worldwide 🌍 - most of whom are primarily of African ancestry or identify themselves as Black. I had the privilege of joining my first HOSA-Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference a few weeks ago. As a HOSA alumni and newly appointed HOSA-100 International Advisory Council member, I had the opportunity to witness over 11,000 students (yes- you read that correctly) who want to pursue careers in healthcare. Students were supported by their local and regional advisors, showed off their talents, many walked away with scholarships and celebrated together! A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of competing at the HOSA-Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference. In the event category of "Job Seeking Skills" I placed 10th out of 150+ competitors from not only the entire United States, but also China, Korea, Samoa, Puerto Rico and more! I had only joined my school's chapter earlier this year two months before the state competition on a whim. Not excepting to win anything, I went to the State Leadership Conference to learn and prepare more for next year. However, to my surprise I won first in Job Seeking Skills which meant I had an automatic ticket to the international competition. I knew it was not an opportunity to pass up, so my sister, father, and I booked tickets to Houston, Texas. Even though I was the only girl from Marian High School who was able to attend ILC this year, I hope many more get the opportunity to go next year. I am glad I got to represent my school as well as the state of Nebraska.
