DC HOSA Students Make Their Voices Heard on Vocational Education Bill
Yesterday marked a significant moment for career and technical education in Washington D.C. as the City Council held a public hearing on the “Vocational Education for a New Generation Act of 2024.” As the DC HOSA State Advisor, I was incredibly proud to witness our students and advisors testify alongside other stakeholders, demonstrating the power and impact of Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs).
A Strong Showing from DC HOSA:
The hearing saw an impressive turnout from the DC HOSA community:
- 9 students from DC International Public Charter School, 3 of whose shared testimony (Molly Kirsch, Hanna Furber, Via’Shalaine Eisenberg)
- 1 virtual participant from McKinley Technology High School who testified (Jamison Ford )
- HOSA advisors from Coolidge High School (Masaley Kargbo ) and DCI - District of Columbia International School (Jake McCormick )
- Myself, representing DC HOSA at the state level
Our presence sent a clear message: DC HOSA is actively shaping the future of healthcare education in our city thanks to the support of Clifton Martin , Candice Mott , OSSE Office of Industry Engagement , and all of the LEA’s, partners, and Parents who have and continue to share our message.
Advocating for CTSOs:
While the proposed bill has garnered widespread support, we recognized a crucial oversight - the lack of emphasis on CTSOs like HOSA. Our testimonies highlighted how these organizations are integral to comprehensive career and technical education, providing students with leadership development, networking opportunities, and hands-on experiences that complement classroom learning.
The Power of Student Voices:
The most inspiring aspect of the hearing was witnessing our students articulate how HOSA-Future Health Professionals has impacted their lives and career aspirations. Their testimonies brought to life the transformative power of CTSOs, demonstrating to council members the real-world benefits of investing in these programs.
Looking Ahead:
As we move forward, it’s clear that the voices of DC HOSA and other CTSOs need to be central to discussions on vocational education. We’re committed to working with Council Member Robert White, Chairman Phil Mendelson and other stakeholders to ensure that the final bill recognizes and supports the vital role of CTSOs in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
I invite all healthcare and education professionals in the DC area to join us in this important conversation. Together, we can shape a brighter future for vocational education in our city.
