Houston Hospice is a nonprofit providing quality, end-of-life care to patients and their families in Southeast Texas.

About us

Houston Hospice is Greater Houston's oldest, largest, independent, nonprofit hospice. Founded in 1980, we are a leader in the hospice care industry and provide services to patients and families of all ages and ethnicities. Headquartered in the Texas Medical Center, Houston Hospice serves 13 counties across Texas and includes: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Jackson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Waller, and Wharton. We believe no one should live in pain or in fear of being alone. Teams of physicians, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, counselors and trained volunteers provide physical, emotional and spiritual support in homes, assisted living community, and in our Margaret Cullen Marshall Hospice Care Center located in the Texas Medical Center. Teams work with primary care physicians, patients and families to identify goals and create a unique plan of care for each patient. We offer educated counsel and compassionate support and bereavement counseling to loved ones and family members. Houston Hospice is an in-network provider for most insurance companies and is licensed by Medicare and Medicaid. Houston Hospice is a member of the Texas Medical Center, Texas Non-Profit Hospice Alliance and the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization. Houston Hospice is accredited by the National Institute for Jewish Hospice and by Community Health Accreditation Program, Inc (CHAP). CHAP accreditation publicly certifies that an organization has voluntarily met the highest standards of excellence for home and/or community-based health care.

It’s Spiritual Care Week and this year’s theme is, “Chaplains Beyond Religious Roles.” We decided to take this opportunity to share with you a little about our hospice chaplains and the vital role they play as part of each patient’s interdisciplinary team and, contrary to popular belief, how they help people of all backgrounds – religious or otherwise. 😊 Today we are featuring Dan, chaplain for the Red Team and Inpatient Unit. ❤ 🏣 👉 Dan’s path to becoming a chaplain is filled with irony … He took a career aptitude test in high school that suggested he would become a priest, which was not at all what he had planned. 30+ years later and Dan still enjoys his work as a hospice chaplain. 👉 Meeting patients where they are and helping them to discover the support they already have within themselves is part of Dan’s philosophy. He believes every contact is a socially supportive presence, regardless of religious or spiritual concerns. 👉 Dan considers being a chaplain to be more intuitive than intellectual. Finding out what’s important to patients and then following their lead regarding faith, family traditions and rituals becomes a circuitous journey of discovery and growth. #spiritualsupport #chaplain #hospicechaplain #spiritualcareweek #hospice #hospicesupport #hospicecare #hospicelife #houstonhospice

He said he wants to make end-of-life for patients and families a meaningful experience. 👉 When asked about the biggest misconception people have about hospice chaplains, Robert said they believe chaplains are one-dimensional and only pray and read the Bible. He said many people often believe the chaplain's primary job is to be present at the death of the patient 👉 Robert's greatest joy as a hospice chaplain is being able to give meaning to the last steps of a patient's journey and to do his part in helping to make it a good transition. His greatest challenge is getting in the door of a patient's home and dispelling the myths surround chaplaincy. #spiritualsupport #chaplain #hospicechaplain #spiritualcareweek #hospice #hospicesupport #hospicecare #hospicelife #houstonhospice

Enduring. Loyal. Givers. These are just a few of the words used to describe Vivie and Chris O’Sullivan, honorees of this year’s Houston Hospice 26th Annual Community Spirit Award. ❤️ The O'Sullivans give very generously of their time, leadership and expertise to numerous worthwhile organizations in the greater Houston area. Tonight's event is chaired by Jenny Kempner and Isabel Lummis, with honorary chairs Chris Knapp and Liz Winslow, and we will celebrate the O’Sullivans with a special program. Make sure to check back tomorrow for a recap of the festivities ... #community #communityspiritaward #hospice #hospicesupport #hospicecare #HoustonHospice

When she first learned of hospice care and the kind of services provided, JayE wished she and her mother had known about hospice when her mother was terminally ill. They were young immigrants from South Korea and had no idea. 👉 People often have a preconceived notion of what a chaplain will look like. When JayE shows up for an initial visit and patients/families see a thin, short Asian woman with an accent in her English, she is not who they were expecting. She says this opens the possibilities for interesting dialogue and creates the ability for a better rapport with diverse cultures. 👉 One of JayE’s greatest joys is providing validation of a patient’s accomplishments and affirmation of their being. #spiritualsupport #chaplain #hospicechaplain #spiritualcareweek #hospice #hospicesupport #hospicecare #hospicelife #houstonhospice

We serve everyone, which includes those who believe in God and those who don’t. 👉 Patients and families who may not have a belief in God or are nonactive in a faith often have pre- and misconceptions about chaplains and Marc says this is his greatest challenge. 👉 His greatest joy is the expression of appreciation he receives from patients and families, which comes in many shapes and forms from a kind word of thanks to requesting he officiate the memorial service of a loved one. #spiritualcareweek #spiritualsupport #chaplain #hospicechaplain #hospice #hospicesupport #hospicecare #hospicelife #houstonhospice
