💫 NEW RESEARCH: Stop Cop Cities, Invest in Public Health Solutions Our latest research uncovers the severe public health threats posed by the proliferation of militarized police training facilities, or “Cop Cities,” across the US. The report, Stop Cop Cities; Invest in Public Health Solutions, draws on a comprehensive review of public health literature, input from community organizers and public health professionals, and data from ongoing resistance efforts against Atlanta’s Cop City to reveal how these facilities exacerbate racial, environmental, and social injustices, undermining community health. It also offers actionable public health strategies to counter harms and truly support community health and safety. We need stable, healthy, affordable homes, not the enrichment of #CorporateLandlords who discriminate against California families! A historical undercover investigation by Housing Rights Initiative found rampant discrimination & clear violations of the law by real estate companies against families with Section 8 vouchers. This is the largest largest housing discrimination case in California’s history, against 203 real estate agents, brokerage firms and landlords, including some of the largest real estate companies in the country: Coldwell Banker, EXP Realty, Sotheby's International Realty, and RE/MAX. Francisco Dueñas, Executive Director of Housing Now! CA: “Expanding the supply of affordable housing would mean corporate landlords being less likely to turn qualified tenants, including those with Section 8 vouchers, away, and to “cherry pick” their tenants, as there will be more available units, as opposed to the status quo where tenants are forced to compete for the same few units." BREAKING: Inner City Law Center, Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC, and Handley Farah & Anderson PLLC have filed a historic number of complaints on behalf of the Housing Rights Initiative against California landlords for illegal, widespread Section 8 voucher discrimination. #section8 #housingnews #housingpolicy #housingjustice #canews https://lnkd.in/g-kpm3fx

With at least 130 deaths and up to $110 billion in damages, Helene showcases the escalating human and economic costs of climate-fueled disasters. Climate change is making extreme weather events like Helene more frequent and intense, with the average household now losing $1,900 per year due to climate disasters. https://lnkd.in/gtHcvDs9 While communities are left to rebuild, fossil fuel companies continue to profit from the very pollution driving these catastrophes, making $2.4 trillion in 2023 alone. https://lnkd.in/grucvUDQ. New research shows that tropical storms result in thousands of additional deaths over the 15 years following the event, highlighting the long-lasting impact on public health and community resilience. https://lnkd.in/gGCMJ9Kx It's time for Big Oil to be held accountable for their role in the climate crisis. The Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act, which HIP has endorsed, proposes creating a $1 trillion fund over 10 years to address climate impacts and build resilience. https://lnkd.in/gS3w62_4 It's time for fossil fuel companies to bear the cost of the climate crisis they've fueled, rather than leaving taxpayers and vulnerable communities to shoulder the burden. By implementing both state and federal climate superfund legislation, we can hold these corporations accountable, fund critical climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, and build a more resilient future for all.

📢🌍 Big News! We're excited to endorse the just-introduced Polluters Pays Climate Fund Act of 2024, and it's a game-changer for our planet and communities facing the brunt of environmental injustice. This groundbreaking legislation is designed to hold big polluters accountable by making them contribute to a fund that will remediate the impacts of climate change through various ways, including: rebuilding and upgrading infrastructure, cleaning up pollution impacts in frontline communities, providing climate-related disaster assistance, and setting aside 40% of the fund for environmental justice communities. By ensuring that those who contribute the most to climate change also invest in its solutions, we're taking a huge step towards a healthier and more equitable future for all. Let's come together to support this crucial bill and make real progress in the fight against climate change! Tell your Senator to support the bill! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ejgntwUD #MakePollutersPay #EndFossilFuels #ActOnClimate
