According to #research, about 5 million expansion adults could lose #Medicaid in 2026 under a federal work requirement similar to the Limit, Save, Grow Act – a 2023 House bill informing current discussions. Urban experts assessed the potential coverage losses under federal Medicaid work requirements for adults ages 19 to 55 enrolled in the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion. The #analysis draws on lessons from two states – Arkansas and New Hampshire – with prior work requirements for their expansion populations and the Limit, Save, Grow Act. Research shows that many families receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are still facing food insecurity, and proposed cuts to the program could exacerbate existing challenges for eligible participants across the US. Does #SNAP cover the cost of a meal in your county? Using an interactive #tool from Urban, explore #data by county, or filter by rural-urban continuum codes to see patterns of the maximum SNAP benefit per meal with the county-level average cost of a modestly priced meal.

While asset limits are intended to restrict eligibility for public benefits programs and to target program spending to people most in need, #research shows that asset limits hurt families’ #financial security and increase costs for both the government and individuals. Raising Supplemental Security Income’s asset limit and adopting a universal asset limit could not only improve #families’ financial stability and reduce administrative costs but could also contribute to a more effective and efficient social safety net. According to #research, households faced persistent challenges affording food in 2024 and more than one in four adults reported food insecurity, unchanged from high rates observed in 2023. In a new brief from the Urban Institute, experts examined 2019–24 trends in household food insecurity and receipt of charitable food using data from Urban’s Well-Being and Basic Needs Survey. The #analysis also sheds light on the challenges US households currently face in meeting basic needs and the potential impact of cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (#SNAP) and other federal food programs. Explore the findings.

Proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could include elimination of the 2021 update to the Thrifty Food Plan – a model used to determine SNAP benefits. #Research shows that if this plan update is rolled back, #SNAP benefits will fail to cover the cost of a modestly priced meal in every county in the US. How would SNAP benefit cuts affect your community? A new Urban tool provides #data on the effects of eliminating the 2021 update to the Thrifty Food Plan for every state and county in the US.
