So many of our efforts to bring human, progressive, and deeply meaningful learning experiences into our schools are undermined by antiquated grading and reporting practices. I appreciate how colleagues at the Human Restoration Project continue to put powerful questions, thoughtful practices, and innovative practitioners in my path. Bookmarking this so I can catch up over lunch today....
What does the research say about report cards and grade reporting? We spoke with Dr Astrid Poorthuis about the impact of grades & grading on student engagement & motivation:

Happy World Teachers Day to all the amazing teachers who show up for children every day to give them the best learning experiences possible. It's one of the most challenging and rewarding careers in the world and we tip our hat to all of the amazing teachers we are lucky enough to work with across SA. Thank you for all you do.

Independent reading time is so essential to building the skill of becoming one with a text. Students have time to get lost and let the magic of the reading experience take over.
Building a Stronger Case for Independent Reading at School: "[Independent Reading] serves as a complementary activity that enhances students’ engagement w/ reading, making it indispensable not only for supporting reading skill development but also for fostering a love of reading." https://lnkd.in/gGE7jDbj

Spaces & Structures, Part Two - Seeing the Shape of Thought: "Because the thing we’re learning isn't ‘how to produce an essay’ or even necessarily ‘how to make an argument,’ but how to see the shapes of thoughts..." https://lnkd.in/gwpSDXvQ

There are so many good highlights from my conversation with Zach Howlett about meritocracy, anxiety, and the gaokao, the national college entrance exam in China, that I have to start sharing them now! I thought at first, sure, every country has its school gatekeepers and methods of rationing secondary & post-secondary education – the SAT & ACT in the US, or the GCSE’s in the UK, for example – so how is this any different? But what I was not prepared for in Zachary’s work was the sheer magnitude of the gaokao as a deeply Chinese cultural, economic, political, and even a magical and religious phenomenon that touches every aspect of life, and for which there really is no American equivalent. Human Restoration Project expands its exploration of educational anthropology in this new episode, which we've got queued up for release on November 2nd.
