Urgent Help Needed for Shelter Pets Impacted by Hurricanes Helene & Milton This past Friday, HSNT teamed up with Wings of Rescue and other North Texas shelters to take in 130 displaced shelter pets from areas hit hardest by the storms. These pets, already in shelters, were transported to North Texas to free up space for animals separated from their families during the hurricanes. This is in addition to the 64 pets received on a flight last week after Hurricane Helene. In total, HSNT has taken in 40% of the pets on these flights and that’s where we need your help! Why It Matters: With Florida shelters at capacity, pets impacted by the storms need a place to stay until they can be reunited with their families. By opening our doors to the pets that came in from the two Wings of Rescue flights, HSNT is playing a part in giving those Florida and Georgia shelters the ability to focus on reuniting pets with their owners during this difficult time. 76 Extra Pets Are Now in Our Care Each of these animals needs food, supplies, and medical care—and more could be on the way. We're urgently looking for additional donations to cover the costs as well as foster homes and support to care for these animals until they find forever homes. We provide everything our Foster Heroes need—food, blankets, toys, supplies, and medication. North Texas was fortunate to escape the path of these hurricanes, but we can make a real difference for the animals who weren’t as lucky. Will you help us today? Your donation ensures that every displaced pet gets the care they need. Please give as generously as you can. Donate here: https://shorturl.at/4AsXv

It is the mission of the SPCA of Texas, the Humane Society of North Texas, and Second Chance Animal Services to care for vulnerable animals in need and to help them find forever homes. When contacted by Wings of Rescue, all three organizations immediately said, “Yes” to helping the HSV and their beautiful pets. “Helene left Valdosta, Georgia, in ruins, where trees toppled onto houses, and flood waters poured through homes. The city’s animal shelters, which were already at capacity, are taking in huge numbers of pets who were separated from their families as Helene ravaged the city. To make room for these strays – who hopefully will be reunited with their families – many shelters euthanized all the pets who were in their facilities prior to the disaster. Humane Society of Valdosta/Lowndes County chose a different route and called Wings of Rescue, asking us to fly these dogs and cats to a place where they would be safe and adopted.” -- Wings of Rescue President Ric Browde Let's help them ALL get adopted!

🎊 Yesterday, HSNT celebrated our 119th birthday!🎊 Bet you didn’t know… On a summer night in 1904, a group of doctors, businessmen, homemakers, and a judge met in Fort Worth to formulate a plan. In the city streets of Fort Worth at the time, it was common to see starving dogs and cats or horses and mules staggering as they pulled overloaded wagons while being beaten with bullhide whips. Newspaper stories often reported the abandonment of infants and young children and the physical abuse of women by drunk husbands. This group of people wanted to make a difference! In 1905, the Fort Worth Humane Society was officially incorporated as an independent charitable organization with this purpose: “To protect women and children and to prevent cruelty to animals." Within a few years, fountains were built to water thirsty horses coming into the city from dry West Texas. Homes were found for abandoned children and hundreds of animals were rescued from starvation, neglect, and physical abuse. After many state and federal laws were passed to give more protection to women and children, we moved our focus to solely protecting animals and in 1982, our name was changed to The Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) to reflect our belief that kindness cannot stop at county lines. Over the last 119 years, we've had quite the journey! From housing three Bengal Tigers that were previously used as guard cats for a local drug dealer, to finding homes for 72 Carpet Pythons, Rock Pythons, and Anacondas (up to 20 feet), to taking in 497 dogs from a Puppy Mill, to receiving 267 horses, cattle, and 2 llamas from one of the largest seizures in Texas history... our work has been heartbreaking and fulfilling at the same time. HSNT went from one small building, to 3 shelters, an equine ranch, a spay/neuter clinic, a rehab center, and an animal cruelty department. It's truly been an amazing last 119 years of exponential growth with more to come! We are so grateful for every one of you who continue to support the work of HSNT. We are not funded by the state or city and rely on the support of individual donors to keep our doors open. You are making a difference and contributing to an incredible legacy in North Texas. Happy 119th Birthday HSNT! 9-23-1905 Pets and People, Saving Each Other
