"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." – Dr. Seuss, The Lorax Last week, our Education and Animal Law Enforcement teams had the incredible opportunity to participate in Read Across America, a nationwide initiative that fosters a love for reading in young learners. This year's celebration was even more special as it coincided with Dr. Seuss's birthday! At HSPPR, we believe that pets and people are better together, and that starts with instilling empathy, kindness, and responsibility in the youngest members of our community. Through timeless stories like The Lorax and Horton Hears a Who, we helped students explore themes of compassion, advocacy, and courage—values that extend beyond the classroom and into their relationships with both people and animals. We're incredibly proud of our team for showing up for the young people in our community. By fostering a love for reading, we're also nurturing a generation of empathetic and kind leaders. What's your favorite Dr. Seuss book that inspires kindness? Let us know in the comments! 📚🐾 #ReadAcrossAmerica #HSPPR #AnimalWelfare #DrSeuss

After a devastating week of wildfires in the Northern part of Colorado, Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region opened its doors to evacuee pets. Two shelters in the north were experiencing an influx of pets seeking refuge from the fires, so to help them out, we agreed to transfer animals to us. 6 dogs, 13 cats, and 4 turkeys were welcomed to the Pikes Peak Region. These animals were in the shelters before the fires and are not owned animals. 23 pets got a second chance, and that's the true magic behind our work. Partnering with other Colorado shelters and rescues increases our impact and allows more pets and people to get the help they desperately need. Animal welfare is all about collaboration, and we could not do what we do without transfer partners and our incredible animal-loving communities!

Even just a few minutes in a hot car can be deadly. Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and Colorado Springs Fire Department recently rescued a dog from a hot car. It was 82 degrees outside at the time, and the dog was showing signs of heatstroke. With both teams working together, the dog was safely removed and received emergency veterinary care at our Colorado Springs shelter. On an 82-degree day, a car could easily reach 130 degrees after an hour of sitting in the sun. We want this story to be a reminder that sometimes, leaving your dog at home is the best and safest option. Read the full rescue story here: https://lnkd.in/gVK5C_ep

🎆🐾 This holiday weekend is one of the busiest at HSPPR, with many pets going missing. While the weekend is fun for us, it can be terrifying for pets. Loud noises, bright lights, and crowds can cause fear and anxiety. Let’s keep our furry family members safe with these tips: 1️⃣ Keep pets away from fireworks: Fireworks can cause anxiety and injuries. Exercise pets before the fireworks and don’t bring them to displays. Secure fences and bring cats inside. 2️⃣ Create a calm space: Set up a quiet room with familiar items and use white noise or soothing music. Give them project toys to focus on. 3️⃣ Mind chemicals and food: Monitor BBQ items like lighter fluid, charcoal, and foods that can harm pets (e.g., alcohol, chocolate, onions). 4️⃣ Keep vet info handy: Have your vet’s and an emergency clinic’s contact info ready. 5️⃣ Tag and chip: Ensure your pet has a collar, tag, and updated microchip. Let’s keep our pets safe this July 4th! 🐶🐱❤️ #PetSafety #July4th #HSPPR #HumaneSociety #PetCare #LostPets
