While the Dutch colonial legacy is ever-present, few people are aware of where to look for it. This is also the case in The Hague, where numerous streets are named after colonizers, buildings were created from slave labor money, and a number of places housed anti-colonial activists. These sites, however, are not well-known. As their Fellowship Action Project, 2023 Amsterdam Fellow Nicchelle Buyne developed poetry workshops titled 'Colonial Traces' to increase awareness among citizens of The Hague regarding the city’s colonial past and ever-present symbols that only help perpetrate patterns of racism.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. In our rapidly-changing world, young people increasingly feel powerless, which impacts their mental health. Anxiety is fueled by concerns about the state of the world and a lack of vision to turn their ideas into action. ‘Social Youth Leadership: from Ideas to Impact’ inspires and motivates young people to become socially active. 'Social Youth Leadership' allows participants reflect on the issues that matter to them and learn how to turn their concerns into actionable steps. The workshop provides tools and strategies to transform ideas into concrete projects with tangible results, empowering youth to make a meaningful impact in their communities with confidence. “I learned to start doing. I can take up a lot of time intellectualizing the world’s problems, but here I needed to take action." - (Fellow 2024) Book a Humanity in Action training today: https://lnkd.in/dfQaMTPy

Over the summer, I completed the first step of my fellowship at Humanity in Action. I had the opportunity to coexist and collaborate with individuals driven by a moving commitment to social justice and human rights. With a focus on the role that colonialism and white supremacy continue to play in both national and international spheres, our cohort actively engaged with experts on the socio-political and legal issues of the past and present. I would like to particularly acknowledge Dr. Dina Zbeidy, whose lecture and panel discussion on settler colonialism in Palestine does not cease to inspire reflection and admiration in me. Throughout this fellowship, the persistent discrepancies between law and justice have become hauntingly clear. Formal legal systems often reinforce societal power structures while presenting themselves as gateways to justice, fairness, and equality. This reality manifests in various forms, from ethnic and gender-based discrimination to the criminalisation of poverty and the mistreatment of immigrants and refugees. It is in this light, and with the invaluable support of Humanity in Action Nederland, that I am conducting my Action Project, the People's Advocacy Network. This project aims to create a collaborative space for marginalised groups to share experiences, legal resources, and advice, empowering individuals and communities that often lack access to legal support and enhancing the law's fundamental role as a tool for justice. Crucially, this is not a one-woman job. I am looking to involve law students and experts, public interest and pro bono legal agencies, experienced activists, digital specialists, and more. If your interests and experiences align with the project, or if you simply would like to know more, feel free to reach out.
