Together we're creating a legacy worth leaving. Join us in working with Iowa farmers to improve water quality!
About us
The Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance is a nonprofit working to get water quality projects on the ground in Iowa through farmer-led efforts. We were formed by the Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association, and Iowa Pork Producers Association. Based in Ankeny, Iowa, our work reaches farmers statewide. To date, we’ve fundraised over $220 million dollars for Iowa’s farmers. We’ve connected more than 150 organizations to work together for water quality, and we’ve reached thousands of farmers through our communications efforts. IAWA works with agri-businesses, commodity groups and other farmer-led orgs, public agencies, cities and counties, universities, researchers, conservation professionals, and others to find and deploy market-based solutions to water quality problems. IAWA promotes practices that improve soil health and preservation, such as cover crops, no-till, and nutrient management. We also support in-field and edge-of field practices such as bioreactors, saturated buffers, prairie strips, and wetlands. The IAWA Business Council is a nationally recognized, award-winning group of about 20 companies who partner on public-private water quality projects, and innovate together to continue to find water quality solutions. We want to give a shoutout to long-time SWCS member Erin Ogle, who received the 2024 Watershed Coordinator of the Year Award at the Iowa Water Conference last week! Pictured below you can see Erin presenting at last year's Iowa Chapter meeting on her work to integrate conservation practices with livestock operations in Taylor County. Her passion for conservation and community are unparrelled. Congratulations, Erin for receiving this well deserved award! Getting all stakeholders to the table is a powerful thing! Thank you to the N Initiative for sharing your trials with our Business Council!
Yesterday at our Iowa Nitrogen Initiative field day held at Erik Christian's family farm, Michael Castellano said something that articulated why I joined this project two years ago, and why I'm so passionate about the work that we do. I won't be able to repeat it verbatim, but his message was essentially this: field days are absolutely important for communicating with farmers, but when they attract agribusiness, elected officials, high school ag students, and other members of the public, we are just as excited because we have a responsibility to educate EVERYONE. Nitrogen, agriculture, the environment - all incredibly complex on their own and even more so when you put them together - and we all have a stake in the future of this science. Our INI project team is incredibly energized going into harvest (aka, data collection season), and we can't wait to discuss with you what we learn from our nearly 500 on farm nitrogen rate trials in 2024! Thanks to everyone who makes this work possible - especially thanks to Erik, Alaina, and their family for hosting and inviting a great crowd, and Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance for their financial and logistical support for this field day.

Great broadcast and great field day with Bloomsbury Farm Inc, Iowa Corn the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative! We talked about the benefits of in-field research and nutrient efficiency. Farmers are getting a lot more efficient with nitrogen by using technology like variable rate application and split-applying during spring and early summer, and the research from INI is going to help them do even better!

This USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service spotlight on Lillie Beringer-Crock is inspiring! Lillie is 3rd-gen farmer who is building upon her parents' and grandparents' legacy through regenerative practices. On the 280 acres she rents from her parents, she's switched all the crop acres from corn-on-corn tillage to a 100% no-till corn and bean rotation with cover crops, leading to improved soil health and less erosion, while providing nutritious grazing for cattle.
