“Entering inpatient treatment takes courage as well as hope, and indeed, desperation. Unfortunately, the reward many of these young people receive for this step toward healing, recovery, and exiting homelessness is to be discharged back to emergency shelters, drop-in centers that have no beds, or worse.” We can do better.

We're so grateful to Governor Shapiro for being a mental health champion and to the Pennsylvania legislature for investing in youth mental health. This commitment will significantly impact the lives of young people across Pennsylvania. 🙌
We love celebrating mental health wins, and here's another: last week, Pennsylvania passed a budget that includes $100 million for school mental health! Investing in school mental health is key to making sure help is available for students who need it. Seeing Pennsylvania’s bipartisan commitment to promoting school mental health programs is a major victory in our eyes.

"Congress is taking its time to decide whether Medicare should permanently pay for telehealth. The Bipartisan Policy Center says that’s a mistake." We couldn’t agree more. Telehealth is a lifeline for accessible mental health care. Without it, many people face a dire lack of options for mental health providers in their communities, often resulting in them foregoing much-needed help. The Bipartisan Policy Center’s latest report explains exactly why we can’t afford to wait to extend telehealth. Read the full report here: bit.ly/4fiud8j

“Coverage doesn’t always equal care — until today,” said Bill Smith, founder and CEO of the nonprofit mental health advocacy group, Inseparable. “This law is for you if you or your loved ones have ever struggled to get the right medication to treat mental illness and have been told by your insurance company that you have to fail first with the wrong drugs before getting the treatment, that you need.”

“If you’ve ever called through to an insurance provider directory, trying to find a mental health provider only to be forced to wade through inaccurate information, wrong numbers, and bad addresses at the moment when you really need help, this law is for you,” said our Founder & CEO, Bill Smith. Inseparable is proud to have supported this legislation and can’t wait for other states to follow Illinois’ lead.

It was an emotional and inspiring morning in Chicago where I was honored to speak as Governor JB Pritzker signed the Heathcare Protection Act that bans predatory insurance practices like step therapy, prior authorization, and ghost networks. I’m proud of the inseparable team that worked closely with the Governor’s staff and legislative leaders to craft this law, as well as our team of lobbyists who pushed it across the finish line. Governor Pritzker is leading the nation with these patient protections for mental health and Inseparable is going to work to bring these laws across the country so everyone gets the mental health care they deserve. Thank you to Heather Wier Vaught, Jennifer Camille Lee and Dave Horwich (The LAVA Strategies dynamic duo), David Lloyd, Angela Kimball, and all the amazing advocates who made today possible.
