⚠️ 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬: 𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 ⚠️ An industry-wide strike has paralyzed Canada’s west coast ports, with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Ship & Dock Foremen Local 514 striking all BCMEA member companies. This has led to a coast-wide lockout and major shutdowns in Vancouver and Prince Rupert. Key impacts include: 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬: Expect higher road and rail freight rates and significant delays. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬: Maersk has postponed operations on vessels like the Marcos V in Vancouver and the San Felipe in Prince Rupert. 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The Port of Montreal’s Termont terminals, handling 40% of its container traffic, have been blocked due to labor disputes. IAM thanks the US Government Accountability Office for an opportunity to share our perspectives today during their review of the Global Household Goods Contract (GHC). This review was mandated as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for FY2025. While this is the first step in a process for GAO to produce a report in 2025, we hope the input we provided today will inform that analysis and address some of the challenges the industry is seeing in the transition to the GHC. IAM stands ready to contribute further and connect GAO with other stakeholders who can add more depth to their analysis.

Negotiations have reached an impasse, and the MEA is urging the government to appoint a special mediator to help resolve the deadlock before the December 3 deadline. With the longshoremen's union without a collective agreement since December 2023, this strike could significantly disrupt operations and impact several companies’ financial stability.
