IBSS' Mark and Lisa Tagal had the pleasure of leading the Sound Science Summer Day Camps at Discovery Academy throughout July and August!  The MaST Center Aquarium, in affiliation with Highline College, provided the perfect location for this incredible hands-on learning experience for campers aged 8-14, blending education with fun. These camps were made possible partly by a grant from eeBLUE/NAAEE, in collaboration with IBSS, to teach kids about aquaculture literacy.  The camps focused on the fascinating world of oysters, and taught the campers how they’re grown and how different growing methods impact their shape. Campers explored the differences between single-shell oysters raised in grow bags and those set on shells and grown on oyster reefs. They also learned about the various ways oysters are consumed and how specific growing techniques align with market demands. A highlight was the trip to our "mock oyster farm" suspended off the dock at the MaST Center aquarium. Campers got their hands dirty, harvesting and sorting oysters while exploring the gear used in oyster farming. They even created official oyster farm DOH tickets and bills of sale, documenting the farm-to-market journey. This is only the start of the outreach events planned using funds from the grant from eeBLUE/NAAEE and NOAA through IBSS. This event was made possible through the MaST Center Aquarium and their role as an Informal Learning Center Partner in the grant, along with some of our Industry Partners, Jamestown Seafood and Port Madison Community Shellfish Garden, in conjunction with the Puget Sound Restoration Fund. The Port Madison Petites, Sequim Bay Sapphires, and Jade oysters were all generously donated to help us bring aquaculture literacy to life.  We’re grateful to everyone who participated and thrilled to have sparked a passion for aquaculture literacy in the next generation! #Aquaculture #AquacultureLiteracy #SustainableSeafood #EmpoweringStudents
