About us
The ICONIC consortium aims to develop innovative digital and physical tools to achieve fundamental breakthroughs for the integrated control of wind farms, considering the whole physical system at farm, turbine, and component levels, in particular the complex aerodynamic interactions among turbines. The proposed integrated control solutions will be demonstrated by an extensive validation study via high-fidelity simulation models, experiments at a national-level wind tunnel, historical operational data, and real-world wind farm field tests.

WHAT IS BEING DONE IN EUROPE TO IMPROVE THE CONTROL OF WIND FARMS ⁉ 📅 Join the webinar on September 10th featuring four projects addressing this topic. 💶 Horizon Europe has granted funding to 4 projects under the call "Integrated Wind Farm Control" aiming to unlock the full potential of #wind energy technologies for low-cost, reliable, and clean energy generation 🎯 To achieve the EU's goal of being #climate neutral by 2050, the next generation of wind farms will need to be supported by an even more innovative set of physical and digital tools, as well as operational controls, collectively known as wind farm control. ✅ Generally, wind farm control refers to the coordination of different wind #turbines within a wind #farm to improve the overall farm power production and to reduce structural loading among wind turbines. The European projects ICONIC, SUDOCO, TWAIN Project and WILLOW Project EU are working on achieving these innovations. ✍ You can now learn more about it in the webinar that has been organised the next 10th of September, a 1.5 hour online session. The second consortium meeting of the ICONIC project was held virtually on 24 June 2024. The meeting included an administrative part, a technical part, and a session on the forthcoming External Advisory Board meeting. Each work package leader provided an update on the development of their work packages and discussed their plans for the next six months. We are pleased to see good progress in all the work packages and look forward to meeting in person in Bilbao between 26-28 March 2025 for the third consortium meeting.

Looking forward for the collaboration!
🤝NEW COLLABORATION BETWEEN EU PROJECTS! 🎉We are thrilled to announce that from WILLOW we are partnering with three other projects that were also selected under the Horizon Europe call ‘Integrated Wind Farm Control’. The European projects involved are: 🔹iconicwind project “Smart, Aware, Integrated Wind Farm Control Interacting with Digital Twins” 🔹SUDOCO project “Sustainable resilient data-enabled offshore windfarm and control co-design” 🔹TWAIN Project “Integrated, Value-based, and Multi-objective Wind Farm Control powered by Artificial Intelligence” 🌟 Recognising the existing synergies, the four EU projects funded by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, we will be organising webinars, events, and clustering activities together. 📢 Stay tuned for the updates! #ProjectsCollaboration #EUprojects #WindFarmControl #innovation

Dr. Jincheng Zhang from the University of Warwick attended the Torque 2024 conference in Florence which has seen over 700 wind energy scientists and engineers attending. His poster presentation is about the reconstruction of dynamic wind turbine wake flow fields from virtual Lidar measurements via physics-informed neural network (hashtag #PINNs). Specifically, the wake flow field is reconstructed by fusing the sparse measurements with the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations without imposing any models for the unsteady wake. Different from supervised machine learning approaches which need the measured values for the quantities of interest in the first place, the proposed method can achieve the prediction of the wind velocity at new locations where there is no measurement available. The evaluations via high-fidelity numerical experiments show very promising performance. Stay tuned for the full conference paper which will be published in open access by IOP Publishing. A brief video introduction for this paper is available at the ICONIC YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/dQWHNffv

Congratulations on the successful kick-off meeting of the ICONIC project, held over two days on March 7-8, 2024, in Ghent, Belgium. The kick off meeting started with self-introductions from project investigators and researchers on their backgrounds and research areas, which is followed by a general meeting on the administrative part of the ICONIC project. After that the meeting moved to the scientific part that included individual work package meetings and thematic cross-cutting meetings between work packages, identifying links, establishing collaborations and planning the next four years of work. The ICONIC consortium gathers a comprehensive range of expertise encompassing component, turbine, farm, and grid integration levels, as well as specialized knowledge in modeling, control, AI, aerodynamics, digital twin, and wind power. Below is a list of the 14 ICONIC partners, which are located in 7 countries: Belgium (C-Power, Ghent University, KU Leuven, ZF Wind Power Antwerpen NV) Denmark (Aalborg University) Netherlands (SKF Group) Norway (EDRMedeso , Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)) Spain (IKERLAN., LAULAGUN BEARINGS) United Kingdom (bp, Imperial College London, University of Warwick) Switzerland (embotech)
