A First-Timer's Perspective: Attending the UNGA Summit of the Future This September, our IEEE Young Professionals Climate and Sustainability Sub-Committee member Kalyani Matey had the pleasure of attending the United Nations General Assembly Summit of the Future: Action Days as an IEEE Young Professionals Delegate. Let’s hear about her experience at the UNGA Summit of the Future. She says “This was a big first for me! It was reassuring to witness the scale at which NGOs, social enterprises, global organizations and governments push towards sustainability! Every conversation led to learning something new. My biggest takeaway from SoTF: Collaborating to find a solution with limited resources > Competing for limited resources We are all on the planet's side. It's our only home. It was abundantly clear that climate action and sustainability needs more hands on board. Not just from STEM - but also good communicators, designers, marketeers, project managers. Each of us can make a difference. Even with my purely non technical background in sales, marketing and program management, I felt like I belong. Later in the week we hosted 'A Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Climate Action', a NY Climate Week event organized by the IEEE Young Profesional Climate and Sustainability Sub-Committee, in collaboration with other organizations. The event was well received! Panelists left us with thought provoking insights. One audience member described it as 'a breath of fresh air' because of the interdisciplinary, multigenerational dialogue. The event actioned sustainability beyond dialogue - We sourced beautiful block printed shawls from Divyang Creations ( www.divyangcreations.com ) as tokens for panelists. They are a social enterprise I volunteer with; they train and employ underprivileged persons with disability to craft products with repurposed fabric. We donated the food left over after the event to local community fridges. As someone who is on a dependent visa awaiting work authorization, I found a much needed way to be productive in a professional environment through the IEEE YP Climate and Sustainability Subcommittee. The experience has been packed with invaluable learnings, and meaningful networking. Thanks, Sajith Wijesuriya, Hasala Dharmawardena, PhD, PE, Sukanya S M., and IEEE for this opportunity. I also want to congratulate the team for building an infallible culture of collaboration. I'm proud to be a part of a community that genuinely fosters collective growth.” The IEEE Young Professionals thanks Kalyani for sharing her experience. 🌍 Inspiring Outcomes from New York Climate Week 2024 During New York Climate Week 2024, the IEEE Young Professionals Climate and Sustainability Sub-Committee successfully hosted the event "A Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Climate Action: Young Practitioners and Their Role in the Technology Transformation." This timely dialogue, held just after the United Nations' pivotal Summit of the Future, brought together influential leaders from IEEE, IEEE Young Professionals, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), World Meteorological Organization, International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC), Global Renewables Alliance (GRA), YOUNGO, SDG7 Youth Constituency, and Student Energy to foster actionable strategies for climate action and advancing the SDGs. The panel featured esteemed speakers - Saifur Rahman, Bala Prasanna, Marisa Zalabak, Ko Barrett, A. Anastasia Kefalidou, Ana Rovzar, Josh Oxby, Ciara Kavanagh, Manar Elkebir, Dinara Ermakova, PhD, Grace Young and Chinmay T. 🌱. The session was led and moderated by Sajith Wijesuriya and Sukanya S M.. Shreenithi Lakshmi Narasimhan delivered a compelling intervention and call for action during the event, emphasizing the need for immediate action. The event was made possible with support from several IEEE YP CSTF members, including Kalyani Matey, Shaibu Ibrahim, EIT, PMP®, Narendra Ragav Venkatesan, Yuhan (Sicily) Zheng, and Polat Goktas, Ph.D., and R1+2 YP Coordinators Sam Stone and Tory Welsch. 💡 Key Outcomes: - Cross-Sector Collaboration: Established new partnerships between young professionals, industry leaders, and multilateral organizations to amplify climate solutions. - Technology & Policy Integration: Explored cutting-edge technologies driving sustainability and how to leverage them through effective policies for global climate impact. - Youth at the Forefront: Highlighted the critical role of young professionals in shaping climate action, from technology transformation to policy advocacy. - Actionable Solutions: Engaged in dynamic discussions focused on real-world, scalable climate solutions, aligning technology with sustainable development. - Compelling Call to Action: With a powerful message—"The stakes could not be higher"— the event delivered an urgent call for immediate action to address the climate crisis and accelerate the global energy transition. We were proud to present each panelist with a beautifully handcrafted Block Print Shawl from Divyang Creations ( www.divyangcreations.com ). These shawls are made by underprivileged persons with disabilities, and contribute to a circular economy by using repurposed fabric for all their products. This event reinforced the importance of collaboration across sectors and the power of youth-driven innovation in accelerating climate action.
