In 1888, the Richmond Union Passenger Railway made history as the first successful electric streetcar line in the United States. Recognized as an #IEEE Milestone, this system was developed by engineer Frank J. Sprague who introduced a conduit power supply system and electric traction, which proved that electrified transit is safe, convenient and reliable. The influence of Sprague’s streetcar system extended far beyond Richmond, creating a scalable model that laid the foundations for public transit systems worldwide—including the New York City Subway.

Robots are making their way to an increasingly diverse array of use cases from sorting recyclable materials to automating agricultural processes—all with little human supervision. Experts predict that robots will be even more prolific in the coming years as AI and more advanced sensors help them become more user-friendly and even more human-like. While the dream of a general household robot to tackle household chores may still be a long way away, today’s advancements are paving the way for a more automated tomorrow.
