Chemical engineer Jess Nanayakkara reflects on her STEM journey and how her work sustains her passion while making impact in the world. In a Q&A with The Engineer, she shares: "A lot of what I love about engineering comes down to the impact of my work. The gases we make are both life critical and life enhancing. Our gases, for example, helped to keep hospitals running in the pandemic with ramped up oxygen supply. They are also used in the food industry to keep food fresh for longer, and they support life-saving research through cryo-preservation of bio-materials." Sarah Friar, chief financial officer at OpenAI, had a fireside chat with Nicole Small, CEO of Lyda Hill Philanthropies and LH Capital. Their discussion launched the “Pegasus Park Speaker Series” held at The Biotech+ Hub at Pegasus Park in Dallas, TX. The inaugural event welcomed 200 guests, including tenants and friends of Pegasus Park. There was also a meet-and-greet between Friar and 50 young women attendees. The students—from The Hockaday School, Uplift Williams and Young Women’s STEAM Academy at Balch Springs—were encouraged by Friar to harness connection as they navigate their path through STEM. MEET Kim Dyball, Executive Manager of the Young Indigenous Women’s STEM Academy. She is a recipient of the Frank and Helen Zobec Churchill Fellowship to investigate how young Indigenous women are being empowered to thrive in various STEM fields. She is a Kalkadoon woman from Mount Isa, North-West Queensland and has nearly 30 years' experience working in the field of Indigenous Education, youth affairs, and policy. "I feel an immense sense of gratitude and responsibility, knowing that our project will investigate how young Indigenous women can thrive in STEM across various countries," Kim said. "I call the project ‘our project’ as it is not about me - it is about the young women we serve." #stemnews #womeninscience #steministupdates
