Thank you Dr. Anna Fisher for a way forward and thank you to Sarah Moshman for making this film. #nasa #women #aerospace #steministupdates
40 YEARS AGO TODAY Dr. Anna Fisher strapped herself to a rocket and became the 1st mother in space! Anna was part of the 1978 astronaut class, when NASA started accepting women and people of color for the first time ever. She was chosen for a mission in 1983 when she was 8 months pregnant, and then stepped onto the Space Shuttle Discovery November 8, 1984 with a 14 month old daughter watching from below. Incredible. When Chrisy Moore first told me this story in 2021 I knew in my bones it was a story I had to tell. Anna’s journey to me is the perfect encapsulation of the complicated intersection of motherhood and ambition and the impossible standards women are held to. It has been one of the greatest joys of my career so far to make UNBOUND, a short narrative film about Anna’s journey to space - and I never could have imagined I would be sitting next to Anna when I was award First Place at NASA’s Cinespace Global Short Film competition and Unbound would screen on the International Space Station! 🚀 Anna’s story continues to empower me but I can’t help but think about how women have progressed significantly since her mission, and yet also, we have stood in place and are sliding back in other ways. All I know is to be a storyteller for me means fighting to represent women’s stories on screen so we can learn, reflect, be empowered and push forward. Thank you Dr. Anna Fisher for paving the path! Someday soon Chrisy and I will tell her story in a bigger way ✨ This Sunday in honor of the anniversary of the mission, join me virtually for a screening of Unbound and a lecture on how the film was made at the Evanston Arts Center: https://lnkd.in/gTYRxyS6
