In improvement work, it’s important to understand the psychological factors that might be impeding change in addition to the technical ones. Combining Behavioral Insights (BI) with the Model for Improvement is one promising strategy. This recent IHI blog explores the work done by Rie L Rosenthal Johansen and Simon Tulloch switching from IV to oral antibiotics for acute care patients at Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark. Prolonged use of IV antibiotics is a result of clinical behaviors and choices, and therefore improvement requires behavior change.
