Happy to share that the newly established assembly of the Environment Committee of the European Parliament agreed yesterday to keep endorsing policy developments for the safeguard of European soils from plastic pollution. The new Committee renovated the commitment in undertaking inter-institutional negotiations with the EU Council and Commission in order to amend the upcoming soil monitoring law with the inclusion of microplastics among the critical soil pollutants. Microplastics impact soil health, fertility, and crop quality. It is therefore crucial to address this pollution in regulatory terms. Our project Papillons Horizon has had a crucial role in bringing this environmental concern to the EU agenda and worked with the institutions to endorse a revision of the Soil Monitoring Law draft with a focus on soil microplastics. We are committed to keep monitor these policy developments and provide scientific knowledge to support institutions in ensuring the safeguard of the environment and European citizens' health. The relevant amendment text is reported here: .Amended 38 of the Soil Monitoring Law - "(48b) "Substances such as persistent organic pollutants, materials and particles, including microplastics or nanoplastics, pose a clear risk to soil health, but also to essential activities such as the development of agriculture. Their presence in soils can have implications for soil fertility, thereby compromising the health and healthy development of crops. It is therefore essential that this Directive provide for a framework for both substances and materials to be included in the monitoring of soil contaminants, and for the establishment of environmental quality standards and a set of measures to prevent and remediate soil contamination from known and emerging threats, where appropriate."
