"Are you a classroom teacher, reading specialist, literacy coach, or curriculum leader who is frustrated with the limitations and challenges of reading assessment? We believe that reading assessments are more than just tools for measuring student progress—they are essential for planning and guiding effective instruction to address each student's unique needs, strengths, and backgrounds." Our latest blog post—by Laurie Elish-Piper, Mona W. Matthews, and Victoria Risko—summarizes the four big ideas they will cover in their upcoming #ILAWebinar on September 19. https://lnkd.in/ewx_R2Gw

Literacy and the skills it encompasses are essential to participate meaningfully in society, and access to literacy needs to begin in childhood with a wide variety of reading materials, opportunities to read, and high-quality literacy instruction. The International Literacy Association created the Children’s Rights to Read campaign to spread awareness of and promote advocacy for the fundamental and inalienable rights of children to realize their potential through literacy. Add your voice to ours by signing our pledge to ensure every child’s right to read. https://bit.ly/ILA_CRTR

Thanks to your support of our Impact Library Program, we granted 20 Little Free Library book-sharing boxes filled with books to schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations last month! Vanessa—a previous grant recipient in Salinas, California—told us about her rollercoaster of emotions: “After receiving the Impact Library grant, I anxiously waited for my little library. I was excited, but also nervous that even though I had good intentions, it could be disastrous. Perhaps, it wouldn’t be well received by the community or there wouldn’t be any engagement or it could get vandalized. All the possibilities swirled around in my head. "Today, I’m in awe at how lovely this community has been. Without much more than word of mouth, my Little Free Library sees engagement a few times a day and has had more than a dozen new books added to the rotation in just the six weeks it has been up and running. Some books that have been taken have been read and brought back, and the fun stickers in the kindness box have been flying off the shelf. It’s times like these when a community comes together over something seemingly insignificant that I am reminded that one person can make a difference. My Little Free Library on La Mesa is positively impacting at least one person and that’s all I could have ever wanted.” https://lnkd.in/gn56UeXR #books #bookaccess #bookdeserts #community #communityengagement #littlefreelibrary #littlefreelibraries

An extension of ILA’s Children’s Rights to Read initiative, the newly updated and expanded advocacy manual includes a questionnaire to help readers critically examine their own and their community’s literacy practices, targeted action items for each audience (teachers and reading specialists, instructional coach, school and public librarians, administrators, families and caregivers, and policymakers), and concrete steps they can take to accomplish those goals. UNESCO made #InternationalLiteracyDay two days this year, so our observation of #ILD2024 continues with this article from the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy. "Leveraging Critical Literacy on Social Media Interaction in Acculturation" by Shiyu Cai and Chun Lai explores how adolescents use digital skills to navigate multilingual online spaces, challenge biases, and connect across cultures. This research perfectly fits the theme of #ILD2024, "Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace."
