Why are we settling for this reality? The majority of students can learn to read using explicit, systematic, & cumulative methodology. We can make a difference for kids & our future in this nation. “People who cannot read are at significantly increased risk of dropping out of high school, entering the criminal justice system, and living in poverty (Cree et al., 2022). This trajectory is established early. Students who are not reading proficiently by 4th grade are far more likely than their peers to struggle in school and life (Snow et al., 1998). It is therefore alarming that, in 2022, 37% of U.S. 4th graders scored below basic on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, often known as “the nation’s report card,” and just a third scored at the proficient”

This. Right. Here. If we continue to give students texts that are “just right” and never give them grade level texts they will never improve, stretch, and grow. It’s one thing to use leveled texts to build background knowledge, it’s an entirely different story to use them as primary curriculum. It is not unkindto give a child a text above their reading level with the right supports and scaffolds. It is unkind and inequitableto believe they “can’t.” “We should also stop seeing comprehension taught via leveled reading groups, where each group visits the teacher for round-robin reading through a new text “at the right level.” Instead, we should see use of a rich, complex text for all the students in a class. We should hear multiple reads of the same text, beginning with teacher modeling and moving to student practice. We should see partnering for repeated readings to develop fluency. We should hear the voices of students and the teacher in high-quality conversations about the text that focus on language, structure, and deepened understanding.”

We need to make sure that education continues to evolve and learn, but most importantly we need to trust our educators who continue to explore and learn best practices for instruction. Lets make sure we delve beyond the headlines and seek to really understand what we need to know for high quality instruction and ultimately, an impact on student learning. Many will spew facts about how the system is broken, but few will try to understand how ro impact change. If every parent also learned more about literacy instruction and the Science of Reading our students would have an even greater chance to grow in this foundational skill.
