A coalition of educators dedicated to providing quality higher education opportunities for people who are incarcerated.
About us
The Illinois Coalition for Higher Education in Prison (IL-CHEP) is a coalition of educators, students, activists, universities, and others committed to bringing quality higher education to Illinois prisons and jails and working toward a safer, more just society. Founded in 2016, we operate with the knowledge that higher education programs are among the best ways to offer opportunities and hope to individuals who are incarcerated. Such programs also help all of us imagine alternatives to our current system of mass incarceration. We strive to support our students as they build meaningful lives and prepare for a successful future in civic life. Equally important, we encourage public dialogue and action to reduce our state’s and country’s reliance on incarceration.

How will the closing of Stateville impact it's students? Stateville Correctional Center is set to relocate most of its population by the end of the month due to pressing health and security concerns. While some have long advocated for its closure, this abrupt shift brings uncertainty around the future of prison education programs in Illinois. Educators and advocates like Flor Esquivel (Illinois Coalition for Higher Education in Prison), Alice Kim (University of Chicago), and Phyllis West (Governors State University) are adjusting to this transition while continuing their crucial work. As this unfolds, it's more important than ever to advocate for the education of students incarcerated. 🎓 Transforming adversity into opportunity! Congratulations to Jessica Anne Summers, Joseph Mapp, and Orlando Mayorga for receiving the Quintana Last Mile Scholarship from Adler University’s Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice! 🎉 Jessica’s journey from incarceration to education is an inspiration. As a full-time student and co-founder of the Fenix Collective, she’s using her experiences to advocate for marginalized communities. This scholarship helps her pursue a bachelor's in sociology, with plans for a master’s and doctorate in social work. Here’s to resilience, empowerment, and education! 💪✨ #HigherEducation #SocialJustice #Resilience #Empowerment https://lnkd.in/gJFyeMsc

Had a blast yesterday delivering an impromptu PSA and chatting with IL-CHEP's social media manager, Orion Meadows. Radio was key to honing my oral communication and English skills in my youth years, and programs like these need to stay into existence for that matter. If you're into social justice podcasts, what theme would yours center on? Share your favorite verse with me and join me at our 2nd Annual Verses of Freedom event for poetic inspiration. Last year's turnout was amazing; can't wait to see you there. Radio arte memories: Silvia R. Irene T. Join us in giving a warm welcome to our newest team member, Rakhim Atterberry! Rakhim was inspired to further his education while enrolled in the Community Anti-Violence Education program. In 2023, he graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Illinois University’s HEP program. Rakhim is grateful for the pivotal role reentry programs and higher education have played in his life. He’s looking forward to expanding his skillset and advocating for HEP program funding in Illinois. IL-CHEP is a project of the Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice at Adler University .
