How will the closing of Stateville impact it's students? Stateville Correctional Center is set to relocate most of its population by the end of the month due to pressing health and security concerns. While some have long advocated for its closure, this abrupt shift brings uncertainty around the future of prison education programs in Illinois. Educators and advocates like Flor Esquivel (Illinois Coalition for Higher Education in Prison), Alice Kim (University of Chicago), and Phyllis West (Governors State University) are adjusting to this transition while continuing their crucial work. This scholarship helps her pursue a bachelor's in sociology, with plans for a master’s and doctorate in social work. Join us in giving a warm welcome to our newest team member, Rakhim Atterberry! Rakhim was inspired to further his education while enrolled in the Community Anti-Violence Education program. In 2023, he graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Illinois University’s HEP program. Rakhim is grateful for the pivotal role reentry programs and higher education have played in his life. He’s looking forward to expanding his skillset and advocating for HEP program funding in Illinois. IL-CHEP is a project of the Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice at Adler University .
