EJP is excited to share that the Reentry Guide Initiative is now the Reentry Resource Program. Members decided on this name change to reflect the enormous growth we’ve experienced in recent years. We now have a robust suite of reentry resources including the first national prison reentry guide in the US. We’re using our expertise to provide technical assistance to organizations throughout the US to create guides for their communities through our Reentry Guide Project. We’re no longer an initiative but a full-fledged, model Reentry Resource Program. #ejp #ejpatil #educationjusticeproject #namechange #resources #reentryresources #reentryresourceprogram #rrp

College-in-Prison Program in Illinois
About us
The mission of the Education Justice Project is to build a model college-in-prison program that demonstrates the positive impacts of higher education upon incarcerated people, their families, the neighborhoods from which they come, the host institution, and society as a whole. EJP is based in Illinois and is a unit of the College of Education at the University of Illinois. We offer for-credit courses at Danville Correctional Center, a medium-security state men’s prison. Our ESL program, Language Partners, and our anti-violence program, Community Anti-Violence Education (CAVE) were initiated by EJP students. Other programs that the EJP learning community has developed at the facility include writing and science workshops, guest lectures, a mindfulness discussion group, computer lab, and community library. Outside the prison, EJP produces reentry guides, which are available at no cost to incarcerated individuals, family members, and service providers, and also downloadable from our website. EJP's scholarship program offers $1,000 awards to formerly incarcerated students, family members of people who are incarcerated in the Illinois Department of Corrections, and family members of IDOC or JVCC staff. Applications are due on November 1 of each year. Finally, EJP also engages in advocacy and hosts events to support critical understanding of incarceration and criminal justice.

Reentry Guide Initiative director Lee Ragsdale and emergency fund and scholarship coordinator Erick Nava visited the US border with Tijuana this week. They shared copies of our deportation guide, A New Path with staffers at the newly opened Deportee Welcome Center. They had seen the guide in pdf form but were very excited to get hard copies. About 100 people a day are deported from the U.S. and released at the “El Chaparral” border crossing. The Deportee Welcome Center is there to provide information, socks and undies, and a warm reception from other people who have been through the trauma of deportation. Download our Deportation Guide from here: https://lnkd.in/ggXRQHdk #EJP #EJPatIL #EducationJusticeProject #ReentryGuideInitiative #RGI #DeportationGuide #ANewPath #DeporteeWelcomeCentre #AlOtroLado

Education Justice Project reposted this
We need more of this — education in prison. Another example is the University of Illinois’ Education Justice Project
Discover the work of the Illinois Coalition For Higher Education In Prison (IL-CHEP) and its unwavering dedication to expanding educational access to those who are incarcerated. Today, only 3% of Illinois’ prison population have access to college-level courses. Expanding that is IL-CHEP’s mission, according to Angel Pantoja, who knows all too well about the power of higher education. He was only 17 when he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. While incarcerated, he earned his GED and an associate degree. After his release, he joined IL-CHEP as project manager and today serves as a reentry policy coordinator under the Office of Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton. Learn more about Pantoja’s journey and the life-changing work of IL-CHEP, a project of Adler University’s Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice. https://lnkd.in/gcK6Yz5Z
