For the millions of Americans who are newly eligible to vote, this election cycle gives them the opportunity to make their voices heard on issue areas that are uniquely of interest to the younger generation. Many young people may be voting for the first time since 2020 when teens and young adults experienced events such as the Covid pandemic and protests over social issues. Experiencing these events during their most formative years has established new priority issue areas since the last election. Young voters offer fresh perspectives and desire to make an impact on the political and social landscape of America that better reflects their interests and vision of the next 4 years. When it comes to voting, young adults and teens experience many barriers that may prevent them from participating and casting their ballots in elections. The voting process can be confusing for first-time voters and young voters that move frequently or live away from their permanent residence as they may be unsure of where they are eligible to vote. This barrier to voting is also prevalent amongst youth experiencing homelessness, as they may not have a fixed address with which to register. Additionally, many young voters who attend college out-of-state may not know how to change their address on their voter registration. This group of young voters may also not be aware that they can request an absentee ballot to cast their ballot in their hometown. This Sunday, October 20th, is the deadline for voters to register online on the Illinois State Board of Elections website. As this deadline approaches, many young voters remain undecided about the upcoming election. According to the United States Census Bureau, young voters under the age of 35 account for about 29% of the national electorate and will have a big impact on the results of this election cycle. Link here: https://lnkd.in/guYPv62S A GenForward survey conducted by the University of Chicago identified that the economy is the top priority for young voters aged 18-26, followed by income inequality, and poverty. Additionally, issues such as student debt, housing affordability, and access to health care were also among those influencing young voters. On September 26th, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul released a Voter Misinformation Guide to help people spot and report misinformation about elections and voting on Social media. Attorney General Kwame Raoul warns of artificial intelligence (AI) technology that generates election misinformation, such as incorrect voting locations, dates, and false voting methods. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, over 41% of people aged 18-29 get their election news on social media, making young voters more vulnerable to election misinformation on social media.
