Did you know that Illinois was the first state to create SEL Learning Standards, back in 2003? And that our state was a leader in addressing social-emotional recovery in response to the pandemic? That's part of the reason a crew from the Korean Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) -- an education-focused public broadcasting station in South Korea -- came to Chicago last month to conduct an on-camera interview Dr. Tiffany Burnett, our executive director of Safe & Healthy Climate. SEL is a new concept in South Korea, and the interview with Dr. Burnett will be part of a special program about SEL in the United States. The EBS crew was accompanied by Yun Kyung Kim, a lecturer from Seoul National University and author of a book about SEL.

The Illinois Girls Lead Program is looking for girls in Grades 5-12 who have a strong desire to learn about the inner working of state government. The program offers the opportunity to shadow a woman in state government, including Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, state legislators, agency heads, communications directors, and chiefs of staff. Applications for the Illinois Girls Lead Program are due by Oct. 20.
