About us
The foodservice industry in Illinois is the largest private sector employer in the state, with projected employment in 2019 of 588,000 people and more than $30.1 billion in annual sales. To serve the needs of this important industry and support its future, the Illinois Restaurant Association works to provide restaurant operators and suppliers in Illinois with valuable business services, networking opportunities, cost saving programs, and vital advocacy. Founded in 1914, the Illinois Restaurant Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, protecting, educating and improving the restaurant industry in Illinois. The IRA owns and produces Chicago Gourmet – the annual food and wine festival held in Millennium Park that unites hundreds of restaurants, chefs and beverage experts for a weekend filled with food and drink tastings, entertainment, cooking demonstrations, book signings, interactive seminars and more. The Association is a proud host of the James Beard Foundation Awards, which will be held in Chicago through 2027 and celebrates excellence in cuisine, culinary writing, and culinary education throughout the country. All Foodservice Professionals can sign up for a free login at illinoisrestaurants.org and learn more about the benefits of joining our membership. Crain's Chicago Business Editorial: Restaurants come out in favor of Illinois changes to credit card swipe fees. The restaurant industry is coming out strongly in favor of a controversial Illinois law limiting so-called credit card swipe fees, arguing it is critical to helping the industry recover from the turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. "Swipe fees are the third-largest cost to restaurants beyond food and labor," Sam Toia, president of the Illinois Restaurant Association, told Crain's in an interview. "Before the pandemic, the restaurant industry was an industry of nickels and dimes. Post-pandemic, it has become a business of pennies and nickels. Any way we can add a few pennies to the bottom line, that’s what we are out here advocating for.” Illinois' Interchange Fee Prohibition Act, the first of its kind and signed into law in June, reduces the fees merchants pay credit card processors by exempting state and local taxes and tips from the calculation. Trade groups representing banks and credit unions are suing Illinois over the law, claiming it raises costs on them. Arguments for and against the measure have been pouring into Chicago federal court ahead of oral arguments scheduled for Oct. 30 on the banks' bid for a preliminary injunction blocking implementation of the law. The Illinois Restaurant Association, which lobbies on behalf of 25,000 owners and operators across the state, became the latest to weigh in with an amicus brief filed late last week with the national Restaurant Law Center and Retail Litigation Center.
