Because their abusers hold so much control over them, survivors of domestic and sexualized violence are particularly vulnerable to prosecution under so-called “accomplice liability” laws -- where they are charged for supporting, taking part in, or failing to stop a crime by their abusers. Leonard Lewis was 36 years old when he received an 80-year sentence. This January, after serving 34 years in prison, he finally came home to reunite with his soulmate, Tanya. The two met as teenagers, quickly married, and sustained their connection even through a divorce during Leonard’s incarceration. Today, they are engaged again and are creating a new life together.
