"In 2023, half of those gaining electricity for the first time in Africa did so through off-grid solar systems." We are excited about the expansion of solar power into rural communities in Africa via our education technology program in partnership with @sunkingglobal.

Translating development research and evidence into policy and action through effective communication. Views my own.

GOGLA’s latest report highlights off-grid solar as a prime example of technological leapfrogging. In 2023, half of those gaining electricity for the first time in Africa did so through off-grid solar systems. Just as many people living in rural parts of Africa bypassed costly, infrastructure-heavy landline phones for mobile technology, they are now bypassing traditional grid systems in favour of distributed energy. With costs falling rapidly and energy prices remaining volatile, distributed solar is seen by many as the future of energy in Europe and the US—but in Africa, that future has, in many ways, already arrived. This week, I went on a spot-checking exercise for BEFIT school-level teacher trainings in Lilongwe and Salima. It’s always inspiring to connect with teachers, the key implementers of the #BEFIT program, and the learners who directly benefit from it. At Chimutu Primary school, I was amazed by the School Management Commitee’s quick buy-in—on just the second day of our community sensitization meeting, they had already bought locks for the BEFIT equipment storage cabinets! At Chikuluti Primary school, I witnessed the joy of standard 1 learners as they heard they would start using tablets, (mafoni ndi mabeats)for next week Monday. The community’s support was equally heartwarming, with Senior Chief Yotamu personally attending the community sensitization meeting and committing to ensure the program’s success. At Kachelenje primary school, it was there 15 commandments that caught my attention at first. That aside, the teachers were really engaged in the training sessions and showed readiness and excitement for the BEFIT programme. It’s always a fulfilling experience to see the impact of BEFIT work firsthand. And of course on my way back, just had to take a picture with the humongous baobab tree 😎 #BEFITProgramme #EdTechInMalawi #ImagineWorldwide #BEFITTeacherTraining

I was honoured and delighted to be part of the mEducation Alliance Symposium 2024 at George Mason University in Arlington, USA, on behalf of the partnership for connected education between UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s and the ProFuturo Education Foundation. With esteemed colleagues Mílada Tonarelli Gonçalves, Head of Innovation and Product at #ProFuturo, and Rumbidzai Ayesha Gwete, Education Officer at #UNHCR Zimbabwe, we introduced the implementation of ProFuturo #Mathematics, a tool providing offline individualised learning paths for primary #numeracy, in refugee hosting schools in #Zimbabwe.  I am grateful to Leticia Rato, María Lacadena Beltrán de Heredia, and Conchi Gallego García at ProFuturo Education for their support, as well as Paloma Acedo Diaz Pache at ACNUR Comité español and Kent Awiti for the Connected Education team at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Warm regards and thanks to hosts mEducation Alliance, led by Anthony Bloome, with wondrous support from a fab team at GMU, our co-presenters Vinod Lobo for Learning Upgrade, Nadia Asmal for Imagine Worldwide, and our moderator Rebekah Schulz for USAID.

We love to see the community support for learning. Great work!

Recently, CRECCOM officer, Kumbukani Ngaiyaye, conducted a sensitization meeting with parents and guardians of Standard 1 and 2 learners at Natchefu Primary School in Thyolo District. During the session, parents were introduced to the BEFIT (Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology) gadgets, ensuring that they could identify these devices. The aim was to encourage families to report to the school immediately if they come across any BEFIT gadgets within their homes or community, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding these learning tools. This sensitization effort occurred as part of CRECCOM’s BEFIT monitoring session at the school. The engagement highlights the significance of community involvement in managing and protecting educational resources. By educating parents and guardians on the role they play in safeguarding the gadgets, CRECCOM is fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility that will enhance the sustainability and impact of the BEFIT program in improving educational outcomes for learners in the district. Such initiatives are crucial in ensuring that the technology provided by BEFIT remains secure and accessible to the students who need it most, contributing to the broader goal of advancing Malawi’s education system through innovative technological solutions. At Mankhamba1 Primary School in Thyolo District, the Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) program is transforming the way children learn. Recently, Madam Makwete, a dedicated Standard 1 class teacher, was seen assisting a young learner during a tablet session, illustrating the hands-on support teachers provide in this initiative. UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education

This week at the Summit of the Future, governments will adopt the Global Digital Compact with the goal to advance a better digital future for all. A human-centred, sustainable digital transformation of education is key to achieving this goal. Yet around the world, as major digital divides persist, digital technology is failing to promote greater equity and inclusion in education. To change this status quo, we need to work together to steer technology towards expanding access to quality lifelong learning for all. That is why UNESCO has come together alongside colleagues from UNICEF, International Telecommunication Union, Global Partnership for Education and the partners of the Digital Transformation Collaborative (DTC) of UNESCO’s Global Education Coalition to launch a Common Framework for a more sustainable, balanced and ethical digital transformation of education. We have worked with governments and experts to identify six pillars that are essential for holistic strategies for using technology to achieve their education system goals: 1.   Coordination and leadership 2.   Connectivity and infrastructure 3.   Cost and sustainability 4.   Capacity and culture 5.   Content and curriculum 6.   Data and evidence These six pillars are a tool to help us work together – across sectors and stakeholders — more effectively, openly and collaboratively. This approach is just the start! We will keep supporting countries in every region around the world with the digital transformation of education in a meaningful and comprehensive way – including putting the Common Framework into practice. Thank you to the governments and DTC partners who contributed to this collective and supported our launch event in New York today. Read more on what each pillar means and why the compact is important in the comment below 👇 👇 👇
