We envision a world where no child is denied the chance to learn.
About us
Our vision is of a world where no child is ever denied the chance to learn. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 9 in 10 children do not learn to read by age 10. Children who are out of primary school are uniquely challenged to develop vital foundational skills and keep up with educated peers over time. Our mission is to ensure all children have equal access to joyful, foundational learning, especially those shut out of education by crisis, poverty, or discrimination. To date, Luminos has enabled 377,407 out-of-school children to get a second chance to learn. Luminos currently operates classrooms in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East where students live in very challenging circumstances.

Across #Ethiopia, marginalized girls face countless barriers to #education and many are forced into early marriages – cutting their dreams short. 🚫📚 Meet Kemya, a mother of eight, whose own dreams were put on hold at just 15 years old when she had to leave school to marry. "I went to school up to the fourth grade," she says. "I was really interested in continuing my education, but I couldn’t because I got married." Today, Kemya is determined that her daughter, Romiya, will have a different future. 12-year-old Romiya is attending school for the first time through the Luminos program. For years, she helped at home and cared for her younger siblings. Now, thanks to Luminos’ free accelerated learning program, she’s learning to read, write, and do math. “I’ve seen her improve her reading,” Kemya shares, beaming with pride. "She can read her exercise book so well now. She’s made a lot of progress in a short time." As a mother, Kemya is hopeful for her daughter’s future: “I want her to continue her education and, if possible, avoid an early marriage. I would love for her to become a teacher or a doctor.” For Kemya, education is key to giving her daughter the opportunities she never had – and unlocking a brighter future! #SDG4 #GirlsEducation #EducationForAll

🌍 Today, 1 in 5 children is living in or fleeing from conflict, with 224 million school-aged children affected by crisis – a number that keeps rising. How can #education keep children safe and support their well-being? At Luminos, we know children learn best when they’re happy. Our joyful classrooms are interactive, playful, and empowering, helping students build confidence, resilience, and essential life skills alongside foundational learning. An independent study of our program in #Tigray, Ethiopia highlights the transformative power of social-emotional learning (SEL): integrating SEL into our model boosted children’s self-confidence, communication, and conflict resolution skills while also reducing perceived PTSD symptoms by 53%.
