The overarching goal of the BCOR program is to enhance and expand recovery support services to improve long-term recovery outcomes for individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders (COD). Services are tailored to reflect the unique needs and characteristics of the communities we serve. Ready to meet the team?! In the spring of 2023, the FDA approved the first over-the-counter version of naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medicine commonly known by the brand name Narcan. This approval enabled the expansion of new delivery methods, such as the community vending box we’re unveiling at the Wilmington Recovery Café Grand Opening on September 24th from 3-6 PM at 810 North Union Street, Wilmington, Delaware. This vending box will provide easy and free access to naloxone for residents of the community. The box will be operational during Recovery Café hours and our staff and volunteers will be onsite to provide training and access. In addition, individuals will be able to scan a QR code located on the side of the box for additional training and resources. Low-barrier naloxone access is especially critical to Wilmington’s response to the overdose crisis, given the high rates of opioid-related fatalities in the area. This box is part of a larger initiative to install 50 vending boxes across the eastern United States in the lead-up to Save a Life Day on September 26th, 2024—an annual day of free naloxone distribution. These boxes are fully funded by CareSource, a leading Medicaid health insurer. The vending box will be stocked regularly with essential self-care supplies, such as drug test strips, safe sex supplies, and first aid kits, by Impact Life staff and volunteers. At Impact Life, our mission is to save as many lives as possible from the overdose crisis. This box takes our efforts to the next level, offering free, fast, and easy access to life-saving naloxone. Impact Life is also the lead organization in Delaware for Save a Life Day happening on September 26th. This event spans over 300 counties across 30 states for a national naloxone distribution event. Impact Life will host Save a Life Day events at multiple locations across Delaware’s counties, including Wilmington. For more details, visit www.soarwv.org/east. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to CareSource and SOAR West Virginia for their unwavering support in making these naloxone vending boxes and Save a Life Day a reality. Their dedication to harm reduction and life-saving initiatives is truly making a difference in communities across the country. For more information on either of these initiatives please reach out to Leslie Palladino, Director of Harm Reduction and Outreach at Leslie@impactlifetoday.org.
