SOUTH AFRICAN LAW & SOCIAL MEDIA APPS Did you know that no children under 13 are allowed on social media apps? If you consent to your under aged child going onto a website and signing up to ANY social media site, it means that the user (your child) is concluding a contractual relationship with the company that operates the website. So if you consent to the creation of the social media platform or you find out about it and do NOTHING – you can as parent be held to have given consent to the child’s contract with the website. Children over the age of 10 years, but younger than 14 years, may have criminal capacity. A child between the age of 7 and 18 years old may be sued in his or her own name. Parents, are you aware of the tools available to protect your kids on social media? Blocking and reporting features are crucial for online safety. Blocking prevents unwanted contact, while reporting alerts platform moderators to inappropriate content or behavior. Teach your children how to use these tools on each platform they use. Encourage open communication about online experiences and remind them it's okay to block or report anything that makes them uncomfortable. IN THE NEWS: Legislators in Florida have passed a bill that would prohibit children under the age of 16 from using most social media platforms, regardless of parental approval.
